Algodoo 1.7.4 has customisable fonts inc. bold, italic, big small, and changeable font. This is unnecessary.

I had the same problem. Open up 1.7.4 and 1.7.1, ctrl + A to select scene, ctrl + C to copy it, then ctrl + V to port it easily into 1.7.1. Worked for me.

It's not a 'new Algodoo'. It's a beta. Do not download it if you want to upload scenes, they will be stuffed. Wait until the full 1.7.4 is released, or don't download 1.7.4 at all. This always happens with 1.7.4.

Unfortunately scene explodes in 1.7.1.
