This is similar to a video poker game. It is based on the very common version of Poker known as Jacks or Better. If you have never played Poker, then the game will not make any sense to you. If you want to learn how to play Poker, then you can find the rules on-line.

In this game you place your bets with "gold coins". You begin the game with 100 coins in your stack, and you can keep playing until your stack goes down to zero, at which point you are BROKE. You can bet between 1 and 5 coins before each hand is dealt, and each additional coin increases the payback amount according to the chart.

This scene was made possible because of s_noonan's Deck Of Cards . I used his basic design of the cards and the logic for shuffling and dealing the cards, but I had to add a ton of math and logic in order to make this a Poker game. I spent MANY hours over a two week period on this scene. I hope you like it.

The script is fairly complex so it may have a bug or two. Please let me know if it does something that you believe it should not do.

Thanks!

UPDATE: Fixed bug that prevented pair of Kings and pair of Aces from registering.

UPDATE: added a "hidden" card with texture of card faces. Hopefully this will cure the problem with some users not seeing the card faces.

I was hoping that somebody would make something with the cards. I expected maybe "war" or "concentration". I checked out the code. This is epic.

P.S.: A pair of kings may not count as jacks or better.

Gent,
The dealt cards show for me.

HMM I don't know what I'm doing wrong:bonk:

s_noonan - Thanks for the kudos. I am honored having it come from you. :)

BTW - I fixed two bugs. One was the one that you found (pair of kings not registering) and the other one I found (pair of aces not registering).

Gent - I suggest that you download s_noonan's Deck of Cards and see if you have the same problem. If you do, then the problem is not related to my scene. If you do not have the same problem, then it could be something in my code, but I will wait to hear from others before jumping in and making changes. Thanks!

WOW
OK I downloaded Steve's scene again and it works fine, as it did the first time I looked at it:s
Something weird is going on:bonk:
Gent,

Forgive me if you have been asked this before, but why not just download v2.1.0 since it is free?
OK silly me, I purchased Algodoo edu when it was first released a couple of years ago and have been around from the phun days:bonk:
Just downloaded the free version with the exact same problem, I had been reluctant to upgrade from 2.1b8 to b13 because I had heard of problems with it?
Maybe there there is some scene.my variable that isn't getting loaded with the scene or maybe I'm stupid:bonk: :bonk: :bonk:
Rebooted still no joy with the free download version :bonk:
and NO I don't have an old stupid graphics card:mad:
Even when shuffling the cards they all show up white:'(
I wont rate this down but it flat ass does not work for me

Gent - Do you have a file in your "algodoo\textures" folder named "cards.png"? If not, that may be why you cannot see the faces of the cards. Let me know and if you don't have it, I will upload the file to a forum post so that you can download it into your textures folder.

UPDATE: Here is a link to my forum post:
Card faces not showing up in POKER scene Let me know if this helps.

Thanks

Xray - The files that you posted do not contain the image for the card faces. I don't know why you and I are seeing them, but it would make sense to duplicate a card, make sure it is face up, and then delete all the scripting inside the card. That way you will have at least one item showing the card face texture and then it should automatically save the card face texture image with the scene.

Gent - The problem is on Xray's end and he will notify us when it is fixed.

Note: If you want to see what textures are included in the scene then replace .phz with .zip for the file name extension and then extract it like any other .zip file.

P.S. Xray - It may be that you and I are the only ones who are able to use the scene because we are the only ones that created scenes using the cards. So the sooner you fix this the better.

Gent - Look at the bright side, at least you now have the latest version.

Okay, I did what s_noonan suggested. Hopefully, Gent will be able to see the card faces now!
Looks good to me. I see the image in the .phz file and it works even if I delete the cards.png file in textures before running your scene. We just need to hear from one other person.

Yeah, I would like to hear from at least a few other users. As of this writing, there were 127 downloads of this scene, and you would think that more people would be gracious enough to chime in to report either it works or it doesn't work. (Am I asking for too much? <_< )
WOO HOO it works now good fix:tup:
10/10_o_
GREAT!!!!

Our thanks go to s_noonan for his suggestion!
how do you play poker?
zaydenm - Search the web for "How to play Poker" and you will find plenty of tutorials. There are even a few videos on YouTube. Here is one website for example:

What I found interesting is that it took me quite a while before I lost all of my money. I don't know what the average number of plays are if starting out with 100 coins and betting 5 credits each time. The casino eventually gets your money, but I guess they don't take it away all at once.
Ever since I started using your deck of cards, I've wondered how well it shuffles the deck. In other words, how close to an actual manual shuffle is it? Maybe it's better. But of course a lot also depends on how good a Poker player you are. I do fairly well because I have played poker (with real money) for a number of years when I was in the Navy. In time, you either get good at it, or you lose your shirt (and in some cases, your entire uniform! ).
I actually like this Poker game a lot, and of all my previous games that I've created with Algodoo, I play this one the most. Too bad it doesn't pay with real money.
Yeah but I had a GLITCHED
i had a king and a jack but i lost the hand???
The game is called "Jacks or better"!
