Is this an example of a real world device and how it works (with air, of course)?
Yes, there are two types of air bearings, orifice and porous media, that are assembled in different configurations. This is an example of an orifice type air bearing. Real air bearings have high stiffness and small gaps and tend to average out any rail or pad imperfection.
I recall seeing this type of bearing that supported the X/Y table on a large industrial laser heat treating machine (circa 1980's) but I didn't know how they worked. Thanks!
