I've been interested in steam engines for about half a year now.
So I built one in Algodoo.

Single cylinder, slide valve, actuated by Walschaerts valve gear.
Use up and down arrows to move the reversing lever up/down
(forward/reverse).
When you start the sim, the engine will start to run because of
the unbalanced weight of the connecting rod and the
movement of the combination lever.
Put it into gear using aforementioned controls and it will slowly start
to "truly"run in the selected direction (heavy flywheel tho).

Wow! Great job on this demo of a steam engine with Walschaerts valve gear. I recently finished machining and assembling a model steam engine:

PM Research 6CI Steam Engine Kit

It does not have a Walschaerts valve gear, but I've been thinking about designing and machining one just for kicks. I own a metal lathe and a mill which makes doing this kind of work fairly easy.

Again, nice job! :)

Hello, real Algodoo...
Neat! I know basically every step of machining a model steam engine,
but without a workshop, my knowledge has been unused for half a year
now and it's the worst feeling ever!:(
I used that in my scene "Locomotive" too, before update it was actually working but high speeds forced me to use scripts instead, but i keep it just for visuals
Crazy how small movement of lever can cause whole engine (train in my case) change direction:D

But why is it working at max RPM at neutral "gear"?
Shouldn´t it go fastest when lever is in top or bottom position?:o

10/10 and goes into favorite, more scenes like this and you will earn a new sub.
JakubKubo - I believe that you are correct. When the valve gear is placed in its neutral position, the engine cannot run because the stroke of the steam valve will be too short to open either of the intake ports at the front and rear of the main cylinder. As the control arm is moved toward the "Forward" or "Reverse" position, the phasing of the valve gear affects the length of the steam valve stroke, and also affects the engine's direction.

I did not notice this error in HoverGuy's scene before you asked about it, and your question also prompted me to do some research on the subject! :)
Also this need more geometry to work more smootly, so you can get higher rpm, without breaking or jamming too much
I used just image from toni and lucas to build mine "locomotive"
I also have same "static" engines before it was used in moving train, maybe i can upload some of them...
