Completely mechanical.
Somewhat laggy.

Press shift to read and act upon next card. Adding and subtracting takes awhile so make sure everything has stopped moving before pressing again.

I worked on this for ages, but for some reason it doesn't add properly on certain numbers. Don't know why, got too burnt out to care. Seems to work fairly well on the numbers I have currently. Figured I'd post since people may get a kick out of it. Breaks occasionally.

Rod logic adder-subtractor with three 8-bit registers. Results can be transferred back into register 1 or 2 for further calculations.
All numbers and functions are controlled by "punched cards". Card codes included in scene.

7 cards preloaded:
put 00101101 in register 1
put 00100111 in register 2
add together (= 01010100)
move results to register 1
put 01000111 in register 2
subtract reg2 from reg 1 (= 00001101)
clear all registers

Instead of using eight full adders-subtractors I use just one, which reads each bit stored in the registers one at a time, loads the sum into the Results register, stores the carry, and then cycles to the next bit.

what a nice work:D I like it so much can you teach me how to build that? By the way i will rate your scene
Nice work. One suggestion is to set the brown grid boxes to 10% transparency in order to put more emphasis on the moving elements.
@Ravenplucker - You said: "I worked on this for ages". I'll bet you did! Holy cow, this is another example of the complex mechanisms that you've made. Very impressive. _o_  _o_
Can you teach me how to build this?
Cheers guys

s_noonan - good idea, scene edited. It does look more satisfying with the focus on the moving parts

Xray - Thanks. Next up, decimal calculator, Babbage style!

danielreynard - I started out with this blog
http://www.halfbakedmaker.org/blog/58
There's a lot of good info there. I didn't really understand it intuitively until I started tinkering a lot. Try starting out by replicating the gates shown and getting a feel for using cams to push and pull rods in the right order.
Wow! That kind of scenes always amazed me! _o_
This is really cool!:) I would not have been able to do this!
Why isn't this on the featured page?! This is amazing!
Also how did you like kerbal space program while you played it?
Very cool. What do you do for a living?
will he be back?
