hey, ive made quite a few spring engines and i have some tips!
having the simulation frequency up is great, good job on that.
use 2 bars to connect spinning objects, 90 degrees apart. or you can use 4, all 90 degrees apart. this stops the counter rotating issue.
play with different piston timing. have 1 piston come in 90 degrees after the other for constant power!

the spring isnt timed really, its damping is negative, so it adds more power than is put in. basically, it springs back onto the piston more than the piston pushed it. the crankshaft turning compresses the spring, and it releases the energy as soon as its allowed to expand!
axles tend to be weaker as higher speeds, than springs. so springs are better for that. solid bars work for lower speeds just fine!
PizzaGuy, i just loaded up the upload version of this machine and ran until the numbers 8, 4, and 1, were green. there were 13 balls in the catch bowl, it all seems to work okay
