The valves actualy controll part of the timing of the engine so they are not
just for looks
The opperating principal is pretty realistic
PS you can also turn air friction on and off and change the value to vary the load
on the engine
It would work a LOT better if you spawn a single circle in the center of the cylinders
just big enough to fill the cylinder completely
small spawned circles dont work well in an engine
Vary the density of the spawned circles for throttle
I could modify the scene but thats no fun for you

The lasers are what controls the timing by changing the collision set of the
"piston" circles
I used so many to hopefully get at least one to "hit" the piston at high speeds
If you shut them off it wont run

PS the track is VERY challenging to complete at all

If you move the cylinder up some it works better.
Also the stroke is a bit short for the size of the cylinder
I will do some mods and post a scene resopnse if you want?

I can get more out of it but the reliability goes away
It works much better @ 200hz BTW
I dont see the concept having any value in the real world,
way too many parts
But its fun to play with in the sim anyway
Its certainly given me a few ideas and I learned a bit more
from messing with your scripts
