okay, so it changes. However, what I was trying to do was move the red box forward in the simulation so that it appeared to pass behind, then in front of the blue box. is that even possible?

I have never been able to do that. I tried asking for help in the forum a long time ago, and I was told it was not possible to script it. You can only move existing object forward or backward manually. Sorry
thanks!
BUT...,. There may be an alternative method to achieve the essentially the same goal. Depending on your specific requirement, you may be able to do a similar thing with the collide layers or possibly some other way.
Could you upload your actual scene that you are having trouble with? If so, then point out what you are trying to achieve, and I will try to figure out a way to do it.

It's getting late here so I will have to look into this again tomorrow.

Have a great evening!
There's a way to do that. it involves pause-play, but it works. You change zDepth, and then pause and play. I think that that should work
Sorry for the late comment, but I've just noticed that if you delete any object on the scene (you can spawn an object and delete it) the zDepth is recalculated and the object goes in front of the blue box. Try it
That's how s_noonan did it with his response scene.
OK, i'm a bit late then
What does Zdepth?
Zdepth is exactly what it sounds like. It is the relative depth of an object in the Z axis (which is front to back). So, for example, an object with a Zdepth value that is different than another object's Zdepth value will appear either in front of or behind the other object.
