Many countries that have the capability to fire missiles as weapons, use "tracking ships" to monitor and track their, and other country's, missile launches. During the "Cold War", the Soviet Navy employed a number of such ships. These technically advanced ships were called Soviet Missile Range Instrumentation Ships (acronym: SMRIS). The U.S. Navy monitored these ships very closely during that time period when tensions between the two governments was very high. The Soviet Navy, of course, monitored the U.S. Navy ships.
This scene doesn't do much except to show what a typical SMRIS looks like. To learn more about Soviet Missile ships and other types of missile tracking ships, go here: Tracking Ship |
