This PM was suggested by the Englishman Edward Sommerset (1601-1667) . This is another example of a Perpetual mobile, working on the principle of imbalanced forces. Because the top balls will be closer to the axis of rotation and the lower balls are unevenly distributed, the author expected a permanent stay in motion after shaking the machine. He showed this machine to King Charles I. Even though the machine was described in detail, the result of the demonstration, unfortunately, was not recorded. When you set up ideal conditions the yellow balls will randomly jump and remove a part of the kinetic energy. If the balls are not perfectly elastic, the wheel will stop completely |
