CP has almost 200 GE AC4400CW's and GMD SD40-2's stored and spread out at many locations including St-Paul, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Coquitlam. As well, some GP38-2 4-axle Yard power is stored, and as we reported last month any previous three-unit yard power consists, are now reduced to only paired units. Basically it comes down to a poor economy, loosing major contracts to haul goods, or the end of seasonal traffic such as Grain loads. For these major reasons all Class one railroads must from time-to time store large numbers of locomotives. CP use the following criteria to choose what locomotive models get stored: Age of the Locomotive, Relieability, and its Performance. The model series to be stored gets drained of fluids, the roof stack is covered, to prevent water corrosion, the Batteries are disconnected and sometimes removed, and depending on the storage location, the cab may get locked to prevent vandalism. |
