Make it cheaper

Postby immibis » Fri Oct 02, 2009 5:21 am

I think the full version of Algodoo should be cheaper. If the price were half of what it is now (15 euros, or 21 USD, or 30 NZD), I'm sure a lot more Phun users (like me) would be purchase the full version.

Why? I think that $50 for a game is very cheap :), I think the average price for a game is $99.95, and Algodoo isn't exactly what I'd call "overpriced", considering how powerful the system is, I don't think halving the price would have a very big effect on those phun users that haven't already purchased it, because I think most or all of the reasons I wouldn't buy Algodoo have nothing to do with the price.

Keep in mind that most companies don't just magically have money for anything they want to do, if the price were thousands of dollars for home use per person, I think perhaps I might agree the price may have to be reduced, but $50 isn't very hard to make at all, at least, I don't think so.

Also keep in mind, it is very hard to price a game, and if you compare Algodoo with other games of similar price that simulate physics, you don't find much that compares with the advanced methods of Algodoo (a lot of the powerful methods aren't actually turned on by default, but are still there). Also keep in mind that Algodoo has only been worked on for a few years, yet it already surpasses a lot of physics simulations.

Though, I suppose you will always have people saying a game should be cheaper whether it's cheap or not (if it's $2.50, you may find people saying they may as well make it free).

Overall, I think the price is fine, and, I don't think at the current point in time, it needs to be adjusted, with all the discounts Algoryx makes, it doesn't sound like the company makes much money :D. Also, Algoryx keeps a free version, Algodoo: Phun Edition, which isn't quite as good, but, those who can't afford Algodoo or have some problem preventing them from doing so, can still use the program which still surpasses a lot of physics simulators for free.

I believe they will still give you a discount if you have proof that you were part of the old Phunland community.

They will give you a discount if you can prove you were a really active member of the Phun community. Which I wasn't, but I'll still try to apply for one.

:o make it cheaper? SURE! how about after that, we start giving away free t-shirts! yeah! then, maybe, we can make algodoo FREE! and once the site has to get shut down because we run out of money, thats fine! :D we can just send it to you, all postage paid by us! maybe we can talk everyone else into selling everything for cheaper or even just giving it away! :D yeah, thats a great idea! then we wont need to deal with the economy anymore, because, hey, no more money! :D and once people use up all the resources because they dont have to pay for them, when the world dies a slow, painful death, we can all thank immibis :D thanks, dude!

I know that if no one pay for the software, the company cannot continue to release the software.
I know that when people are willing to pay for the software, the software will become better.

What kinds of game do YOU buy? $40 US is the average for what I see, maybe less. I wouldn't call Algodoo cheap for a high-end game, but I don't think it's inappropriate.

I got the discount...but I still think it should be cheaper for everyone else, especially the people who weren't part of the Phun community and so can't get the discount. At least make it half-price for home users (full-price for everyone else)

Why should home users get a discount and not schools? Algodoo technically isn't for the home user, but to be used as an educational tool.

I buy games from a close game store (it's about 40 minutes away :D). I buy games like.... The Sims 3 ($120), Supreme Commander : Forged Alliance (I forget, I think about $90) and Dynasty Warriors 6 (about $70). I did read somewhere that Australian games are expensive, but I don't remember where, either way, I think ~$100 for a game is fine. Online purchases, not as much, but I don't think Algodoo is too expensive  . A game getting regular updates for free (after purchase) I think is quite a good deal, when these may add functionality (not just graphical improvements), especially for physics simulations (if Algodoo cost > $500 I might be expecting it to receive free updates, but this is not the case, Algodoo is a cheap program :D).

No.AD8 wrote:why don't thy make it $10 USD? they would get a lot of new people to buy it . :wtf:

$10 USD may make it seem like a low function program, a $50 price tag looks like the program has something about it that is worth at least $50 (it has a very large number of things that make it worth it :D), a $500+ price tag makes it look very professional and productive, but more of a high-end, CPU intensive, pin-point accuracy program (Algodoo isn't too CPU intensive and isn't quite pin-point accuracy (it can be pretty close though, I suppose, but frequently produces rounding errors)), a $1,000+ price tag makes those buying it assume that the program is going to be so fully featured, optimised and bug-free that
they could accurately simulate anything they wanted to do (though, programs with this price tag that already exist don't exactly make me go "WOW! I can do everything I want with this, it was worth the price"). I think if it wanted to, Algodoo could pass itself off as something in the $500+ price tag range without much trouble, but I think that doing so would make a lot of people in the community not too happy, because $500+ makes people quite hesitant from this community :D.

Either way, I think the price Algodoo has at the moment is good.
