linux issues

Postby jose1711 » Fri Jul 22, 2011 8:51 pm

hello,

i purchased algodoo 1.8.5. too bad i did not try demo first because i'm not able to run it on my linux (arch linux, i686) desktop. please is there a chance you can compile with libraries staticaly linked? furthermore even if you're setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH to a directory containing libraries, there are missing ones:

- libcurl-gnutls.so.4 - only seems to be found on debian(-based) systems. and it requires a other dependencies: libldap_r-2.4.so.2, liblber-2.4.so.2, libsasl2.so.2)
- libtiff.so.4 is required but libtiff.so.3 is included in lib/
- libjpeg.so.62 - it would be great if algodoo could use of libjpeg-turbo as well..

thank you, jose

PS: i sent this e-mail to algodoo support two months ago - no reply :-(

hello jose,

I would like to inform you that the linux developer is, as far as i know, on vacation!

I will forward this post onto the linux developer...

I am sure that he will look into it as soon as he gets back!

good luck,
electronicboy

hello electronicboy,

great. i started to feel like you don't really care about linux users (or at least the ones that are not running ubuntu). hopefully you will be able to sort the abovementioned issues out.

cheers, jose

i managed it to run at last. see my comments at http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=38569. several questions emerged:

- why algodoo binary expects different versions of libraries than the ones in lib/ (so symlinking is a must)
- why libjpeg and libcurl-gnutls are not bundled
- what are the implications when algodoo is using normal "non-gnutls" version of libcurl

I believe this may be due to how algodoo is mainly built for debian based OS, mainly as they are the most prefairable choise to new linux users.

As for the libcurl question, i dont really know, but my guess is that it may also have to do with the ubuntu as a major distro thing...

I will hopefully get in touch with joel, might have to go nag emil as usual :D
(he usually gets the job done, but he is barely on his machine when i message him over an IM client)

Best regards

ps, i will PM or post the response from joel and link him to this topic.

This is from a conversation on the old official algodoo, facebook fan page:

Anders wrote:Linux is a...non homogenous platform. Supporting this and that distribution, various libc versions etc... In practice it is working on linux. Just that we do not have much requests for it making it worth supporting all the flavours...

Shane wrote: The main distributions that need to be supported should be debian, ubuntu and possibly a few smaller one's like centOS....

Also, couldn't an alternative to libc be found, and even packaged with the algodoo installer?

oh well, im just glad to FINALLY have a responce from someone...

Anders wrote: debian, ubuntu, red hat, + a few more. Well that nails it then ;-)

Kenneth wrote: We are linux fans in many ways but sadly linux has diverged into something that is very difficult to support. The various distribution managers are way, way to egocentric...
Instead, we look forward to application environments that are OS agnostic and web centered, but that still provide access to hardware for optimal performance. NaCl and its cousins are promising.

ps, Ken and anders are both algorxy employee's and im shane...

thank you, point taken. however what i can't understand is that all games by loki i own (and loki is already dead) are working fine. i believe algodoo would work fine w/ modern distros IF you deliver w/ statically built libraries. is that really such a problem? and now i am talking about existing codebase. people that purchased the game cannot be happy seeing the broken product after an update of OS, when they know that the problem IS fixable..

btw you guys are aware of a guy called icculus, right? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_C._Gordon and for instance the fact that

Code: Select all
SlickMcRunfast let us know that Linux porting superstar Ryan “icculus” Gordon is porting Aquaria for free, via the award-winning indie game’s forum:

It’s all up to Ryan… he hasn’t updated me in a while. He’s doing it for free, so maybe some paying work came up and he’s been busy or something.

pinging him and asking for some consultancy (if he's not too busy) cannot harm anyone, i believe
