Algodoo Official Scenes! | Competition Suggestion Thread

Postby Dare » Sun Jun 26, 2011 5:25 am

Hey guys,

After talking with the admins a bit, it is decided to have a public competition for the "official scenes" that are packaged with the new releases of Algodoo.

This thread is not the competition, this thread is for discussing and suggesting rules for the competition.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Competition So Far:

So far, we have a number of groups put into place.
- Educational
- Just for Fun (like a minigame)
- Thyme
- Advanced Thyme
- Mechanical
-Advanced Mechanical
- Scenelets

Rules so far:
- Nothing to complex that it will make low-spec PCs lag
- You can enter more than one scene!
- No changing sim.frequency!
- All scenes submitted must have a detailed explanation IN the scene!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This thread will be updated with your suggestions and by the end, we should have a well structured competition ready.

Fire away guys.

Make sure that one of the rules is that it shouldn't have so much thyme or so many parts that it lags on horrible computers.

It'll be great to see some user created scenes on the new versions. :D

Since there is a "Thyme" and "Advanced Thyme" category, wouldn't it be logical to have an "Advanced Mechanical" category as well? Normal mechanical could have simple machines (catapults), whereas Advanced Mechanical would make use of sequencing and more advanced techniques. (Paragon Cannon)

Also, just a thought, what about Thymechanical? A place to put all those pesky mechanical-thyme hybrids.

Just wondering, will the scenes need to be created specifically for the new version, demonstrating various features and whatnot, or just picked from Algobox?

I think, we had better recreate or re-save a scene with newest beta, for compatibility issue.

I thought i post this here, a game showing the new thrusters, using lasers and a controllable ufo :D

EDIT: since this is a discussion->is this the right kind of scene, or does it has to be less complicated?

Basically, there are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who know binary, and those who don't.
Light travels faster than sound. That's why some people appear bright until they open their mouths.

Should you be able to submit more than one scene?

They should probably be uploaded to Algobox, but since so many scenes exists, and only one scene per user is allowed, the scenes that should be in the competition must be sorted out.
Maybe create a new group on Algobox for the scenes in the competition?

Is it only one scene per user?

In the rules it says you can upload more than one scene.

I am confused.

Oh sorry, my mistake, I read it wrong, but I guess some kind of limit would be appropriate.

Yes, a limit might be appropriate. I'm sure we can just keep it limited to around 2 scenes per user per group, how does that sound?

Do you have a date for when will you start accepting scene submissions? I need to know how long I have to make something cool. ;)

I can't think of any more rules.

I'm assuming of course that this is not like a regular competition with rating scales on various features.

If it changes sim.frequency, it should have a notice explaining, and an easy way to turn it back.

Great idea for a contest dare! The scenes should work flawlessly after being downloaded. simple and sweet seems to be the way to go. The use of textures might need to be discoraged if they are copyrighted images for example of a car. I think i'm going to make up another overly complicated thing for my entry mabye a sequecned cannon.

Must not change default scene settings? Like background, palette, etcetera.

No, if it changes; still allow it to change, but have a notice explaining and that pressing a button will turn it back. Most complex mechanical scenes require a sim.frequency change.
