Internationalizing Algodoo - needs your help

Postby tatt61880 » Mon Jul 26, 2010 5:31 pm

Hi all,

Have you read the post "Internationalizing Algodoo" written by Emil at Algoblog?

I've created this topic for telling this task to you (translators).

Emil wrote:So to summarize: The coming version of Algodoo will support better looking text in any language, using any (available) font, with markup to give the text extra spice. But supporting the character sets of the world is pointless without translations. At the moment, the beta has only a Japanese translation (courtesy of tatt61880), besides the default English and Swedish. But hopefully, with your help, we can have many more this fall.
(Quoted from Internationalizing Algodoo)

Best regards,

/Tatt (the Japanese translator)

P.S. Please read the posts below. I wrote "How to translate Algodoo into your language" with pictures. ;)

I agree but I don't see any point why Russify it. Nobody in Russia will pay 40$ for very specific game like Algodoo.
I've ask Ken for Russian edition and 5-10$ price, but he is too busy...
Dream of Algodoo as game development engine...

Thank you for your comment, Kilinich.

Actually, I guessed translators may hesitate to translate Algodoo.
So I suggested to integrate Algodoo and Phun(Algodoo Phun Edition) into one exe-file for increasing volunteer translators.

I released 1.7.8 today. If all goes well, that will turn into a 1.8 public release in the coming week. My plan is to add no further translation-string before the public release, so in short: if you want a translation bundled with the next Algodoo release, please use the 1.7.8 template and send me the translation, preferably on Monday.

We won't bundle incomplete translations, but we will send out new translations later on if they don't make the release (possible via the "check-for-updates" feature).

Sure, someone in Russia may not buy it. But, here are some reasons why a Russian translation may help.

Someone that has moved from Russia to a different country, but does not speak that language very well, may stumble upon Algodoo/Phun. They have the option to play in English, but in my opinion, they'd be much more comfortable playing Algodoo in their mother language.

Then there could be a student that knows about Algodoo, and is currently studying the Russian language. He could change the Algodoo language to Russian, and use his prior knowledge of the menus, to understand a fair bit more about the Russian language.

It is a notepad file (To be precise, text file).
I've made a tutorial. Please read the tutorial below. ;)

== How to translate Algodoo into your language ==

Step1:
Download the newest version of Algodoo.
NOTE: At the moment (2010/09/27), the newest version is Algodoo v1.8.0.

Step2:
Image
Please open data/language folder which is in Algodoo installed folder.
(There is English.cfg in the "language" folder.)

Check the list.
If there is your language, you can update it. Download it and put it into the "language" folder.
If there is not your language, copy English.cfg and save it as YourLanguageName.cfg (for example, Japanese.cfg for me).

Step3:
Image
Open YourLanguageName.cfg with text editor. (with Notepad++, SciTE, Emacs, Vim, etc.)
There are a lot of words/sentences to be translated (about 850 words/sentences).
You will see for example,
FirstTimeRunningTitle = "Welcome!";
You can translate "Welcome!" into your language.

Step4:
Image
Check your translation with Algodoo.
Click [File], [Change language...] and [YourLanguageName] in Algodoo.
If nothing happened when you selected your language, error may occurred.
Then, press [F11]-key to read the error messages.

Step5:
Try Step3 and Step4 again and again. ;-)
Next code may help you a lot. ;)
Code: Select all
Keys.bind("f2", {App.language == "English" ? {App.language = "YourLanguageName"} : {App.language = "English"}});

After inputting this code, you can change language English <-> YourLanguageName by [F2]-key.

Step6:
After finishing to translate Algodoo, please send emilk the translation.

----
P.S.
Please tell me if you feel my explanations cannot be understand.
Please ask me if you have any questions about translating Algodoo into your languages.
