Landslide Contest

Postby mold999 » Tue May 31, 2011 3:09 am

In this contest, it is your goal to create a barrier to stop a landslide destroying a village.

RULES:
  • No thyme (you are allowed to edit anything in the script box, however, provided that you only enter numbers and no variables).
  • Must be consistent.
  • Try to be creative!
  • YOU ARE ALLOWED TO BUILD IN ANY AND/OR ALL OF THE RED-OUTLINED BOXES!!!

SCORING:
  • A maximum of 30 points is achieved by saving all people. A person who is cut in half, but not decapitated, is worth 1 point. If the person has no injuries, they are worth 2 points. If the person gets their head chopped off, you get 0 points.
  • Houses are worth 5 points each. a fully intact house equals 5 points. If a house is partially destroyed, it is 3 points. If completely annihilated, 0 points.
  • Fences are 2 points each.
  • Consistency is worth 20 points. I will test twice to be sure that your contraption works.
  • Creativity! Make something other than a huge wall! This is worth 10 points.

This ends on June 5th.

SAVE YOUR SCENE AS A RESPONSE TO MINE!!!

My entry.

I recolored the boxes a bit. They are now semitransparent.

Technically I didn't build out of the red boxes, I just told Algodoo to do it for me.

I will download when I get a chance, probably this afternoon.

However, I think my entry is more legal than yours, based solely on what you said.

Let me guess: You spawn a really big box. Or a tall stack of circles. Or a fountain of killer circles. Hmm...... Now there's an idea... I shall do that this afternoon. Please do not steal my idea.

My entry.
Simple & effective.
I have made the challenge a bit harder for my entry by doubling the rocks for the landslide. It worked well for me.

I also have tried it out with 8 times the rocks and it worked for me, though it lagged a lot.
Try increasing the number of rocks. I would like to know at what point my protection fails.
And will I get bonus for an extra effective system?

(Sorry about the double-post, I am still grading everything)

Someone Else :

People: 30/30
Houses: 20/20
Fences: 10/10
Consistency: 20/20
Creativity 0/10

Very affective. However, it was boring and uncreative. That's ok though. The villagers don't care.

Dare :

DISQUALIFIED. You violated rule 1.

Nisheeth :

People: 30/30
Houses: 20/20
Fences: 10/10
Consistency: 20/20
Creativity 0/10

Same as Someone Else's.

Man, how did I forget about the no-Thyme rule? Okay, forget what I said about spawning a fountain of killers.

And I have an idea for a mechanical and more creative entry in the works.

Yes, you should make another contest.

As for creativity
I will think of something else. :(

My first Idea was to create a funnel like figure that will attract the rocks, and then throw them out at extreme velocities, thus sending them away from the village. The only flaw was that not all rocks were in the range of the thrower's attraction.

CONTEST UPDATE!!!

There is a new scene, since the other was too easy. I made the build-boxes a little smaller. If you have already submitted an entry, please either re-do it or try to make it smaller. Thanks!

CREATIVITY HAS BEEN THROWN OUT THE WINDOW!

NEW RULE! NEW RULE!
  • From now on, You cannot fixate anything to the background. This includes gluing. However, you may hinge anything to the background +inf amount of times, if you wish.
  • The other rules listed at the top still apply.

Damn man you didnt even score my entrys and now you completely change the build area, Grumble Grumble
And creativity points is the only way to beat anyone else that gets a perfect score :?
I'll try this again just because it interests me but this is a hell of a way to run a contest :wtf:

My "Landslide1" now works with "Landslide Contest V2". Let me know if it violates any rules or fails to protect the town.

By the way, you should change the fixate rule to include the RED BOXES with the background, since they are fixating to them wont violate any rule, but will act the same as fixating to the background!! A loop-hole in the rules.
I didn't Exploit it though!!

EDIT1 : Don't rate it yet. I mistakenly made the error of remaking it in the older contest scene. I am redesigning it for the newer one.

EDIT2 : Will you count an house intact if it is part upturned, but otherwise undamaged?

EDIT3 : Ignore EDIT1. I corrected it now!! You can rate it! :)

I will hopefully be able to make an entry this afternoon.

This new contest scene sounds fun. And I do not see any entries that use the same idea. Then again, I have not downloaded any yet.

Also, I would suggest editing the second contest scene, so the red boxes do not collide with anything, but are not glued, fixated, or hinged to anything, and have 0.01 density so they stay in place.

EDIT: My entry to the new contest. Note that I multiplied the amount of rocks by seven.

Not at all creative, and not what I originally imagined creating. Precisely because of the lack of creativity thing.

Also, I like how the tree thing bends all the way over the town, completely (well, mostly) protecting it from anything.

I tried the following but was unsuccessful:

If the slope is made zero friction, and a ski jump is added at the bottom, then the rocks sail over the town. I could make a self-deploying ski jump OK, but I was unable to get a frictionless mat under the rocks in time. Anybody can use this idea if they can get it to work.

My "Landslide2" now works with "Landslide Contest V2". Let me know if it violates any rules or fails to protect the town. I still like "Landslide1" better because of its simplicity and effectiveness, but "Landslide2" may be more "realistic".

I suggest that you use stretched hinges like I have in my second entry to make a frictionless mat.

Nice scene Gent!!
Though it is not 100% consistent. It failed 2 out of 10 times (the right part of the bridge was pushed over by the rocks).
but other-wise great.
And yes, it fails if there are 5 times the rocks. The bridge collapses over the villagers!!
