Record?
If you look in the data -> textures folder, there's this one labeled "record.png" (a little red circle, of course), along with the image files for the symbols on buttons you know, like play, pan, hinge, etc. Is this a planned feature or something? Why is that there?

Re: Record?
there was SUPPOSED to be a screen recording feature, but it used WAY too much CPU, so it had to be removed
i guess this is like the sketch tool in beta 5

Re: Record?
Yes, the functionality was commented out in the release and we are looking for a better capture library to attach to Algodoo. An alternative would be to produce playable Flash files...

Re: Record?
Just a thought: You might be able to save object positions every quarter of a second or so, and then interpolate between the positions and render when the recording is stopped,

Re: Record?
I was wondering where the record thing had gone. In the Algodoo video (which wasn't as good as the Phun video, BTW) it showed a record feature. Yet when i got the demo-no record feature. I was kinda disapointed about that.

Re: Record?
If you get X-fire, you can record a good quality Algodoo/Phun movie with minimal lag, but it creates one giant filesize. I recorded a 3 minute video and it was 2 GIGABYTES! But, it is good quality... As for the record function, yah... They took it out because of what Ken said. But... how were they using it with no lag to record the Algodoo video then!?!?

Smart university people get supercomputers to work with, I do believe.
Either that, or the record really did lag the computer down, but then they sped it up again with video editing software.

Yes, that's exactly the issue. A screen capture recorder that captures video into a reasoanble (compressed) file size requires real-time compression, and this is extremely heavy on the processor so it will make Algodoo lag beyond acceptance. On the other hand, a screen capture recorder that captures into raw data is disk i/o intense and gives huge files (and this can also cause some lag), and we really don't want Algodoo to be responsible for filling the disk with many GB of captured raw video.
So, for now, we recommend the use of third party solutions. X-fire works fine, as does the free version of Fraps (and the commercial one of course). Camtasia/SnagIt is yet another alternative, and there are also others.
Once you have captured the video, and want to use it in practise, you need to recompress it into some more efficient file format. Our experience is the VirtualDub works fine for doing this, but there are actually dozens of other alternatives too, free and commercial.
I suppose we should make a real good video capture tutorial...

Re: Record?
You should work on aSVG or something like that to record the videos.. Then you can create a built-in exporter to "normal" formats (i.e. let it record in aSVG realtime, then convert when exporting to different formats).

Re: Record?
I think SWF files are a better idea, since it's the most widespread (and fast) animated vector format.
