Bomber game out!

Postby Kilinich » Sun Feb 06, 2011 10:47 pm

I'm still working on it, but looks like this version ready to play with! :D

You can call (well, actually buy) ammo support aircraft, fuel tanker and repair-in-air plane (not very realistic but fun  )
Every hit to enemy gives you score and money so more accuracy - more money.
Don't get too close to explosions - it will damage your bomber.

Post your high score on Realistic level here! :geek:

This is so awesome. It's better than most flash games I've played.

I got 505, damn missiles. :D

580 FTW. I had to pause the game, I shall continue and get my score even higher.

1030. :ugeek: Ha. Them missiles are annoying, but nothing to worry about, so long as you target the missile launchers with mouse aimed air-to-ground missiles. Unfortunately, you only get 4 missiles.
@Kilinich-would be great if enemy damage affected their accuracy :D On 'for kids' level, my score was +inf  A truly amazing scene; I can't wait to update my mouse-controlled F-15 with some new features borrowed from your game :D

@daniels- a bomb aimer would be good, but I personally would only want it on the 'for kids' level

The Re{x} planes are too fast—I lost at 570 because I spent like 25% fuel afterburning to catch a rearm plane so I'd have enough bombs to kill the trucks that were almost to my base. I killed one on the way back but by the time I got to the bridge one of them had already got across. No, I wasn't damaged at the time.

Maybe even just having the plane spawn offscreen to the left so you have more time to see where it is and get up to speed. I don't think it's possible to catch them without afterburners, though, which frankly just isn't actually realistic, because you're in a fighter and the plane is a big slow tanker.

Edit: That sounds super critical, doesn't it. Sorry. Awesome game.

I like how the missile platforms actually keep track of where the jet will be when the missile gets there and aim accordingly. It's still possible to dodge—not even that difficult if you're moving fast and can swerve—but the turrets are actually a threat.

The slowing-down-when-damaged is also a nice touch, although it means you're basically dead at 50% damage because you can no longer catch the repair plane.

I would echo a comment from the preview thread, also, that accuracy is a big issue—needing a perfect direct hit not only means you waste bombs, making the game harder, but it simply makes the game less fun. Perhaps a bombsight would be a good way to correct—you still have to lead your targets and judge by how much to lead, but no more dumb misses by a millimeter because you misjudged your own speed by 5%.

Still, overall the best game on Algobox.

Thanks for feedback!
I can only say:
you can repair from 50% (even from 70%) if you fly to repair aircraft on afterburner
You can call all 3 support in one time to speed up refuel/rearm/repair time
With little practice you cat catch support very quick

I still can't win on realistic level :x
I know RaRamalum did that, but I can't...

AWESOMENESS.

Huh, it said I won (on forKids) when one bomb was still a ways above the last tank. It looked like it was certainly going to hit the tank, though.

When I am attacked by a wave containing just a few missile tanks, I fly low and constantly drop bombs. When I do that, I usually don't take much damage. Usually 1 or 2 percent before the tank is destroyed. If any.

However, this strategy fails completely when there are a bunch of tanks aiming at you. One pass will earn you much more damage than I would like. So, I just fly above the range the tanks can see- there is a nearly invisible tracer that the tanks will only fire at you if you are inside.

Oh, and it took me far too long to figure out that your missiles fire at the mouse.

And I still have not figured out what the X key does. All I see is an ornamental yellow thing on the plane's nose.

Oh, and I think I will save this to my hard drive.

It's a minigun, but not yet implemented. :geek:

I found it possible but difficult to catch the rearm aircraft at 0% damage with afterburner. I made the mistake of doing a sharp turn and losing almost all of my airspeed right when I called the rearm, so it got like half a screen ahead of me before I got up to speed, but I was still only like 10-20% faster than it at top speed. It seems like realistically the tanker should be 60-70% the speed of the jet without afterburners—just strictly based on real-world performance, never mind game balance.

Maybe make Arcade mode have slightly slower re{x} planes or a slightly more powerful afterburner?

Calling all 3 is a good idea but that only speeds things up when you need all 3—I usually run out of bombs faster than fuel faster than health, if I'm being careful.

But you know what, I really can't complain because the game is so awesome in general.

Recipe for even greater awesomeness and blowing off steam:
1. Mode: For kids
2. In console, type scene.my.addSmoke = false; scene.my.addExplosion = false; (Anti-lag)
3. Click on the jet, "send to back," continue until you can see a box with a bunch of lasers pointed at it
4. Look at the onLaserHit of the lasers until you find the bomb-spawning and missile-spawning ones.
5. Reduce the delay to something like .05 or even .025 for bombs, .1 for missiles
6. Fly an inch from the ground at full afterburners, dropping bombs

Oh also, another suggestion: make it possible to fire missiles without turning by having something like, press and hold the Alt key to disable mouse following, That way you can get yourself flying straight, afterburn to catch up with an enemy plane, get right above it and just fire straight down without going into a steep dive. It'd also be useful for bombing and missile-ing at the same time, since turning messes up your bomb aim.

Is there a way to change the button for the game menu? I have my escape key bound as a panic button.

Sure, you can unpack scene.phn from .phz, found "Escape" and replace it to something else (like "Tab").
Then pack back and play.

Also you can search for laser with that key binding, but I really don't remember where it was :?

Panic button? How'd you do that? And what's it do?

And Kilinich, an easy way to do child objects is simply to build it, select it, Ctrl C, onCollide, Ctrl V. Though, I'm not doing that on the current project (which spawns circles with lasers).

Mold999, type into console
Code: Select all
scene.my.addExplosion

And I agree with daniels220 in that Alt key should disable turning.

You said a while ago that adding a minigun would require complete re-write of the spawn code. So, build the plane with minigun in place, and you know the rest.

You don't clearly understand what I'm talking about. Enemy jets in game is just a box with 0.01 density and zero air friction so it flies straight until rocket hit it. If I implement minigun it must survive after few hits and keep flying in same direction (or even trying to evade). That need more complex tech and spawning code for enemy jets. :geek:
