Paper Plane (Glider) Contest

Postby Dare » Wed Nov 10, 2010 10:16 am

Hello Phunners and Algodooers!

Contests forum has not been very active over the past few weeks, so hopefully this will kick-start the forum again.

Your challenge - to build a paper plane! Effectively a paper glider, because you are not allowed to use any motors at all! Pur gliding power.

Contest Scene:
Rating: rated 6.5
Filesize: 43.23 kB
Comments: 3
Ratings: 4

Aircraft will sit on trailer. On scene start, trailer will launch. Get as far as you can!

Rules:
1) No engines of any type to power plane - spawn, collision, DHC, spring, etc.
2) Scripting for wings are allowed,
3) Plane must fit in red box of course, nothing outside of box.
4) Maximum density 7.0 kg, minimum density 0.09 kg.
5) You are allowed to adjust gravity, but beware of point deduction.
6) Minimum airFrictionMult of 0.2.
7) Points will be awarded for the looks - must look like a paper plane.
8) Be original! Although Phun/Algodoo doesn't have air, you can still make a good plane.

Scoring:
Level of gravity = x 10
Distance covered = x 3
Looks = 0 (ugly) to 20 (outstanding and looks like a paper plane)
Gliding mechanism = 0 (no mechanism) to 50 (epic dynamics)
Type of wing = 0 (no wing) to 50 (one hell of a wing)

Extra points for looking like a paper plane (that means full textures, folds etc).

Prize:
I will probably make anything you request as reward! Within my ability, of course.

Anything you can come up with, as long as it does not power the plane. In fact, I will modify the rules slightly.

EDIT: You can officially use any wing. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Max density is 7, your wing spawn +inf density circles :?

Well I may as well score it, but please do something about +inf circles...

Score:
Level of gravity = 9.8 x 10 = 98
Distance Covered = 87 x 3 = 261
Looks = 16 - Great looks!
Gliding mech = 35 - Fix the circle density.
Wing = 42 - Nice spawner wing.

Total:
452 - Great plane, great score, fix the density of wing and I might give you more marks.

oh, btw, run it multiple times, and in algodoo v1.8.0, because the max distance i got with this scene was around 600 meters
and ill fix the +inf density circles

What the hell have you got in that plane?! It never falls, it just keeps going!!

I might have to disqualify this, it just doesn't make sense... I increase sim speed, it gets lower, I decrease sim speed, it gets higher!

I edited the scene, so now it complies to the max7 density rule, and doesn't rise when you slow it down (remove the spring)

the rule is to construct it in the red square, no rules on the size of any spawned objects.

I see laser beams going outside of the red box. Still can't give you score until you fix this!

Sorry, Dare, but since you don't really understand how that wings works and what can be done with spawinig you can't make good rules for such contest. If I be able to spawn anything outside box or/and glue it to background I can make fly this plane as far as it possilbe until it stopped by airFriction. More than that, how you will check is it create force like engine or not? ;)

In that case make correct rules is harder than make plane itself :D
So I guess you already have a winner ;)

With all the ways we can make wings now its no problem to make a plane that won't fall down at all.
So this contest is sadly flawed, but a very good attempt dare.
Phundamentalists, come to the dark side.
We have much cooler toys.
