Editable plane
I dont know if it would mess anything up but the planes should allow you to cut into them and everything a normal shape can

Re: Editable plane
It would rarely be used. I don't even see how it would be done, seeing as a plane is infinite.

Re: Editable plane
This actually has been suggested before. The way I see it, it could be done by marking where on the grid it gets changed. Still, it's pretty useless and easier done with polygons.

I think it's great if you need to make caves. And using big polygons instead isn't accurate at all. It has a big piece that you can see but not touch.

And you think that problems that occur with large objects might not occur when we use an infinite object instead? Dream on.

I think Rideg means that problem have to be fixed...

It would've been Emil, since Link doesn't work for Algoryx.

Re: Editable plane
I think that you could have a system that is similar to the CSG so that you can spawn a plane and substract shapes sizes to make it look a s you want to.

Re: Editable plane
Plane is an infinite length. You cut any bit of a plane out, and you'll lag, because it's trying to calculate an infinite sized polygon then. Can't do it

Re: Editable plane
but picture that you have a plane then you subtract a box.
- Code: Select all
Scene.addPlane({color:=[1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0]; plane - [[box(x), box(y)], xpos, ypos]})

isnt link quite close to the guys at algoryx or something. if he manages the forums then he might also help manage the servers ( which, fyi, the are planning for a new one).
if he does then he must talk to the guys at algoryx every now and again, and to be honest i think that it was said a few months ago and may even be on the old site.

That's exactly what I was thinking, but it still wouldn't be very useful. Just use a polygon.

Well big polygons doesn't look good and has a way of it's own when you cut it.
Plus if you'd need to make a ditch on a plain surface you'd need to make ultra long boxes to make it appear as a digged plane. and If you need this on a aircraft scene. You'll eventually come to the end of the world :O

Re: Editable plane
This specific feature would be ridiculous, but what I support is angled planes!
Like this:
http://i38.tinypic.com/2zo9kdf.jpg
Depicted here are two angled planes of 90° (yeah, other angles should be possible too)
These would probably be quite useful. For instance in the image above you could place a polygon between the planes as a hole in the ground. They would use a hybrid of the plane code and the box code.
More usage:

Here the two green polygons are supposed to be angled planes. With the orange plane they form a cavity which is reshaped by the brown polygon. Next to the hole the angled planes would act just like normal planes.

Re: Editable plane
Chronos, there's no shame in welcoming someone back. But yeah angled would work. Or be able to spawn polygons with one surface as an +inf surface.

Re: Editable plane
I think that's a good idea Rideg, but sometimes you will need two +inf surfaces, and otherwise i will be a very big polygon.
Examples:
___________________________+inf
\
--\
----\
------\+inf

\-------------------------------/
--\----------------------------/
----\-------------------------/
------\_________________/
Edit: sorry, wrong pictures fixed

Kinda unexplained but you get the picture.

Re: Editable plane
Did you read what i posted? Calculating a +Inf polygon = +inf lag. Think about it.

Re: Editable plane
I don't think it would cause inf+ lag as it behaves like a plane with more sides.
I think tou mean if it could move. Sorry I didn't mentioned that. That could get laggy :S
