Objects with same collision layer passing through each other

Postby justabil » Tue May 25, 2010 6:49 pm

What am I doing wrong?

I have a catapult like simulation. It has a "cup" (three sided box) attached to two springs (pointing up). When I put a steel ball in the cup, start the simulation, and drag down on the ball, it often "snaps" through the cup before the springs are expanded very far.

If I grab the bottom of the cup and drag down, I am able to pull down a little further (expanding the spring more), but when I let go the cup springs up and the steel ball is left behind (falls to the ground).

The cup and ball have the same collision layer and are made of steel.

Thanks,

Bill

The material you set it too doesn't make much of a difference with collisions. This is just a setback of the physics engine(probably all physics engines). The "cup" you made probably vibrated out of the tension of the spring. Try changing spring settings and the object properties.

However, Bill, this can also be fixed by increasing the scene frequency. I can't explain it very well in English, but I'm sure someone'll pop up.
Millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. Something terrible has happened.

I can find where to change scene frequency.

I would recommend not doing that, because if you don't change it back, other scenes won't work right. Plus, everyone who downloads that scene will also have to change their frequency. I would just try playing around with the springs.

I really appreciate everyone's help!

I have the springs at a required setting (I think) so I do not thing adjusting the spring is an option. No one else will be downloading the scene (I am filming it with Camtasia). I can keep a "mastercopy" that is NOT adjusted for later revisions.

If changing the "scene frequency" solves my problem, I am ready to try it! How do you change "scene frequency"?

Thanks again!

If anyone else finds this thread.....

Speeding up the "scene frequency" did solve my problem. I do not know if it will cause me the "side effects" suggested above. I made a back up copy before increasing the frequency, just in case.

Thanks again to all who responded.

The backup won't help. The frequency is stored in your Algodoo config file, so you'll have to change it back to 100 when you're done.

Which is why it's not very good to change it in the first place.
