Algoryx, credit cards, and discounts.

Postby Ivanlul » Sat Sep 05, 2009 1:28 am

I think it was pretty irresponsible of Algoryx to only give credit card users discounts. Many active phun community members like my self feel alienated. I joined the phun forums on October 2008 and since then I've been an active community member. Algoryx claims that the discount is for community members, but they only give us limited payment options. How is this community - Which uses many payment methods - rewarded for their support of phun if Algoryx only gives discounts to credit card users?

Algoryx was not organized enough with their business model when algodoo came out, the community shouldn't have to pay the price for Algoryx's negligence.

A solution: I think a good solution to this problem is to offer the same discount, although in smaller quantities, once all the payment options are available for the community.

I completley agree, algodon't can't give a discount for a community that also excludes a lot of it at the same time, and why wasn't the day it was gonna end posted, or some sort of number of discounted copies left, I really believ they should setup the discount, only with the OTHER payment options. Personnaly, I'm pissed.

Who changed it? ._.

Yeah that's a good point, the new discount should only be for payments other than credit card.

That wouldn't make any sense at all.

And yes, while Algodoo itself is awesome, the marketing plan failed quite badly.

Algodoo is a great software but the business side is bad.

Although the software is for teachers your main consumers are people under the age of 18.

This is what causes change in demand:

* Changes in disposable income - We are in a bad economy, why would anyone under 18 pay 40 dollars for algodoo when they can use phun for free?
* Changes in taste and fashion (changes in preferences) - not applicable
* The availability and cost of credit - Discount only available in credit card, really?
* Changes in the prices of related goods (substitutes and complements) - Phun is a pretty good substitute, again, why would people pay 40 dollars? Also, why would people under 18 pay 40 dollars for algodoo when they could go buy a video game for pretty much the same price?
* Population size and composition - not applicable
* Expectations - not applicable
* Change in Education level - not applicable
* Change in the Geograhical situation of buyers - not applicable
* Change in climate or weather - not applicable
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demand_curve

All the things I've listen have a negative effect on demand. I'm trying to help you, by lowering your price you will sell more copies and have a higher profit. With that profit you can hire more people and expand algodoo!

*Algo... love love love*? Thats a terrible attempt at an insulting name change. I have one a ton more mature, ready for it, *Algo... oops, what was I thinking* or *Algo... oummph, I swallowed my tongue!*.

I am not really all that fussed about this credit card idea, Most people under 18 should not have one anyway, well as far as i am concerned.

In Europe most credits cards (i.e. Visa and Mastercard) are not credit cards at all, but cash cards. The amount is then drawn directly from your bank account, and if there's no money in your account, the payment will fail. Thus, the "credit card problem" (that is, bad habits in buying more than you can afford) almost doesn't exist in Europe, compared to in the US. Most (99%) on-line purchases by people below age 18 are actually conducted by their parents.

What payment methods are missing in the webshop? PayPal is considered and might happen. What more? Of course, we have a pretty good picture of this from marketing surveys and statistics, but since you are the community, we would like to hear it from you too!

An interesting comparison is that World of Warcraft costs around $20 as a start cost and then $15 per month, and has millions of addicted people who pay month after month after month.....

You mean debit cards, I guess. Debit and credit cards are separate types of payment cards.

Okay, so in the webshop you wrote "only credit cards", but I can pay with debit too?

Payments missing: Other kinds of credits cards (American express, Diners, ect), Online trading ( Paypal, and similar services), checks.

I think you guys should lower your price because you will have a greater marginal profit that way. Most of your consumers will be under 18, I can't really see many teens buying algoodo at 40 dollars when they could buy a better substitute with that money. Don't get me wrong, this software is great, but it is essentially inferior to other programs released in this price range. Software companies with bigger teams and that spend more time coding release software at this price range.

I can't see Algodoo and Algoryx growing at this price range, there is too much competition and Algodoo is essentially overpriced. If you guys set the price of Algodoo at 10 - 15 USD and updates at 5 USD I could see the number of buyers growing exponentially.

It is much more expensive here :), if I remember rightly.
World of Warcraft Game Card 60 Day - $42.95,
World of Warcraft - $29.95.

You can compare Algodoo to Photoshop and the like, it is installed on almost every computer at school, yet it has a very high price for a single copy, if you think about it, a product using such advanced technologies as Algodoo could possibly be sold for a much higher price, I've looked at a large range of physical simulations, and none handle physics as quickly and accurately as those included in Algodoo/Phun, which says quite a lot (when these engines include things that people buy on their graphics cards (PhysX)), I think that you would not find many (if any), real-time physics sandboxes that handle physics in such a quick and accurate way.

I think that:
Ivanlul wrote:....Algodoo is essentially overpriced.

Is a wrong statement, and it is probably the opposite, when a simulator contains better physics and faster execution than games which may cost $100.00, surely $48 isn't overpriced. It's like me going and finding something twice as good as photoshop ($1,172.95), that runs much faster, and then saying that the $50 program is overpriced (which is quite obviously a false statement).

I think that Algoryx chose a great price , I buy lots of games that cost more than $100, and I think I would buy Algodoo if I saw it in a store for $50.

I think the biggest problem that faces internet programs is that if you don't have any previous experience dealing with the seller, you are hesitant in getting the product, as you don't know it will actually be delivered :), though, I don't think I'd hesitate when buying from a company such as Algoryx, working with them for quite a while, being able to find roots for a lot of the members that I need to find, seeing proof of better systems, being able to test the entire thing, the speed at which updates are released, a well put together site, consistent thoughts about the community (making it so cheap is wonderful :D), and a large number of other reasons.

Overall, I think that $50 for a piece of software as advanced as Algodoo is a bargain.

You really can't obtain a debit card? In Poland debit cards are usually very cheap.

Photoshop is a tool - you can earn money with this program. Algodoo is just a toy.

you can also earn money with paint.net, which is a FREE alternative to photoshop. you could probably earn money with phun or algodoo too, even though its not thousands of dollars :|
