Get rid of the "trash" folders

Postby Sonic » Thu Mar 18, 2010 1:29 am

There shouldn't be the "trash" folder when you delete something in Algodoo. All it does is eat up hard drive space. If you didn't know it was there, you would never know to clean it out, and then you're wondering why Algodoo is taking up 2 gigs of hard drive space for all your deleted scenes. This could really cause problems in schools because students are often not allowed into the main folders (like My Documents, etc.)

Maybe make it delete the files when it closes?

No, I mean it stays in your main Algodoo directory, even after Algodoo is closed. It just gets moved to a new folder.

Nooooo. I meant it should stay there, but just until Algodoo closes, then it gets removed.

I guess that would be a good compromise.

Algodoo scenes don't take up very much space, alogdoo scenes from algobox usually start instantly (exception is textures.) There is no way you will ever fill up 2 gb of algodoo scenes, the number of scenes on algobox would be nearer to that XD

I know, but what about textures, and pallets, and skins?

This suggestion is stupid, what your asking for is to essentially remove the recycling bin from windows.

Not really. The trash folder are...trash. They're useless. Why do we need them, when we have the recycling bin?

Yeah...but we can already do that. It's called the recycle bin.

But Algodoo can't use the recycling bin. AFAIK no program can.

It depends who you are :D. Some users of Algodoo/Phun have 4GB+ of Scenes :D . It depends on how much inspiration you have :D (and free time of course). It's not too unlikely to get 2GB+ of scenes if you use Algodoo long enough .

For example.

Also, I like the trash folder, because I don't see myself deleting any files, and if I do, it'll most likely be an accident, it's good to be able to get scenes back, because I'd hate to have to work out some of the calculations for some things I've made again.

Perhaps on smaller computers (where 2GB will make a significant difference to the overall free space), it could be quite beneficial to introduce some kind of cleaning of old files, but I think skipping the trash folder and deleting forever should be an option if anything, you sometimes delete the wrong thing (especially if you don't know what you're doing).

There's a total of 7.94GB of scenes on algobox ;)

But keep in mind phun beta 4 didn't have textures lowering the average size per scene.
Despite phun 4 has be around much longer then phun 5 + textures are sure to boost up the total size easily.

All the scenes I downloaded for Beta 4 (several hundred) take up less room then all the scenes I've downloaded for beta 5 (maybe a hundred)
