Gas Operated Rifle UPDATED AGAIN

Postby Roast Beef » Wed Mar 10, 2010 9:53 pm

so i have been a phun/algodoo user since phun beta 2.88 but i rarely upload the stuff that i make
i believe this to be a first of its kind and a much, much, more reliable way to harness to power of a spring bullet.
instead of using recoil this uses the movement of the bullet itself to power the rechambering of the next round allowing for a much more reliable gun with a much faster rechambering due to the high spring strength it allows.
The gun looks like shit because it was only meant to be a proof of concept for the simulated gas operating mechanism.
I encourage anyone reading this to improve on this as best they can, as i truly believe this should be the future of Algodoo gun designs.

Awesome! I usually increased the mass of my bullets so that I would get more power from the round, but then it would take more energy to chamber the next round too. This is so much more efficient! With it pushing against that forward block you can convert so much more of the springs energy into work and you don't need a massive bullet.
This really does clear out a lot of the constraints on recoil operated guns. I can see guns with much higher tolerances like belt-fed MGs popping up as a result of this. I really want to run with this right now but I'm busy :(

The main advantage i see with this mechanism is that you can have a much, much higher bolt spring allowing for a much faster rechambering while still having a weaker bullet spring so you can keep the sim speed low.
even though i didn't really show that off very well, with my sim speed being 1000htz and whatnot...

That is AWESOME. And automatic fire is so simple! But it doesn't work—after a couple shots, something gets out of alignment in the gun and the empty "shells" start falling back into the magazine, which, a few shots later, jams the gun. But in semiauto mode it's totally awesome, and auto works for like 3-shot bursts.

you didn't complete the modification
the piece that keeps spent shells from falling back in? the light blue boxes next to the magazine need to be set to 0 restitution then it will do full auto no problem
i would have put a fire selector switch onto it but this was only supposed to showcase the mechanism not be a fully functioning gun

Awesome. I agree that it's one of the best innovations in phun/algodoo gunmaking. I'm totally going to experiment with similliar system.

It makes me very happy to hear you say that. The more big names that incorperate this into their designs, the better its chances are of catching on. The whole reason i bothered uploading this at all is so that algodoo/phun gus can get a boost in their rate of fire and overall quality, so if it dies because a no-name like me uploaded it then it would really be a shame.

I found the time to make one:

It's useful, but it doesn't raise the rate of fire too much in the 100hz range. I'm not too fond of raising the sim frequency either, but I made an exception to try this out. 350hz isn't so bad.

I realized that too when i was making the AK47
I origionally made it to work in 100htz then after it was working i modified the springs to function faster at 1000htz
I did notice however that even though i didnt experence a noticeable increace in fire rate, I did find it to be much more reliable.
I dont know... Im kindof bummed that the fire rates wont go up, but at least its not wasted effort.

High sim speeds are great for reliability but increase lag in complex builds, its the biggest problem with
most of my stuff
Love your concept

That... is... friggin awesome!!

You need a larger, reloadable clip, though. maybe i'll make one when i get the time.

Hey Roast Beef, don't worry too much about being unknown!

You're smart, post well, and create interesting and awesome stuff.

I feel very similar to you. I've been using phun since just after 3 was released, and I only upload a little. What I do upload has generally been interesting and high quality. I still have the most detailed textureless ragdoll ( master chief ), which no one seems to have bested. :D

Man I need to upload more :P ( on iPhone so no algodoo to test scenes but it looks and sounds awesome.)

Honestly, as I said in phunbox, this is just blow back. Your response with deleting the piston, yes that will kill it's function, but all you really did is move the bolt spring to that tube up there. Subsequently making it more complicated.

In order to make a true gas operated gun, one must have, above all, gas. Gas operated guns have a locked bolt, and the bolt only unlocks after the bullet has left the barrel. Blow back bolts are never locked and it is the force of the cartridge pushing back on the bolt which cycles it, as this gun is doing.

However, as a gun, its really cool. and I congratulate you for it.

I've made several blow back guns, such as this:

This one, which has a separate tube for the spring; You're calling this concept "gas operated":

And this one, which uses delayed blow back:
Rating: rated 7.3
Filesize: 47.25 kB

The bolt is locked until the bullet unlocks it. I think it theoretically gives better firing rates.

your missing the point...
i cant make a really gas mechanism because as you said there is no gas
however the principal behind a gas piston mechanism is that the extra gas behind the bullet is what re chambers the next round
since there is no extra gas i use extra spring strength.
so the bullet pushes directly against the piston which re-cocks the gun
if i put the spring on the back and deleted the gas mechanism i would either have to weigh the bullet down or decrease the spring strength of the bolt to have the same effect
and if i did that i would loose reliability AND it would take a small hit to its fire rate.
With this current mechanism you can make the spring on the bullet re-cock the gun itself instead of having the minimal impulse of the spring releasing doing the work.

Roast beef, i congratulate you. You have re-made this as accurately as Algodoo will allow, using mechanics to "Simulate" Gas.
This is an A-Grade scene, and anyone that says otherwise, is just a hater :)

Look at all of Jax's other scenes, i'm sure if Jax wanted to, he could have made a far better one. Still, it IS the most detailed, and he, and possibly others made it, so dakta DOESN'T have the most detailed one :)

I consider Jax's scene an overload of faked gradients that can't be practically used as a ragdoll on anything without amazing graphics capacity. Mine is more practical. Besides:

JAXNash wrote:THE MOST DETAILED, REALISTIC MASTER CHIEF RAGDOLL EVER TO HAVE BEEN MADE OR TO BE MADE IN PHUN BY ME AND ONLY ME.
Lies about creatorship. You guys claim it was Wildcat originally, but he claims it was all him. I know that mine was entirely made from scratch by me, although Wildcat improved mine and gave credit (added more legs and arms). And, mine was fully released and improved on before JAX's. What is to say he didn't just add more detail to mine eh? :D

Anyways, whatever, mostly I forgot about his. Mine doesn't have the most polygons. But it runs smoothly on my computer whereas JAX's does not. Therefore, I like mine better, because I can actually use it. :P

Point is, you don't have to be JAX to be awesome.
