And actually, it's been suggested more than once, not just in its own topic either. It's also been suggested numerous times on the Phunland forums.

Well, I have a better suggestion: particles. Wait, I already suggested this!

Anyways, summary: they're particles. You can make them killers, attach textures, etc. Kind of like making a ton of spheres with textures, but a lot less work. You can make an object that spawns particles, they can act like water of fire, or ice. This is something that you can do in every major game engine out there.
