Sliding rack tool

Postby royalblue » Mon Feb 22, 2010 7:47 am

You know how you can either use the Hinge Tool to make a hinge, or you can make one yourself with a circle and a shape with a circular hole of the same size in it? That principle could be applied to a sliding piston type tool. When you make your own piston/sliding rack, you make 2 outer bars that are fixated to the background or whatever object you need it to be attached to, and then you put another bar in the middle and make it have low or no friction. The problem with these is if too much force is applied the bar can pop out and if its in a complex device it can be very difficult to find and put back in place, especially if its a recurring issue. What I'm suggesting is a tool that you select, then draw a line which represents the places where the slider can travel. You draw this over the object that you want to slide, just like you place a hinge. It's kindof hard to explain, but does anyone get what I'm saying?

I think there should be pistons because you could make alot more things plus if they were powered u could make really easy elavators and other things.

how could you make a powered piston without it breaking and putting a bunch of wheels?

There's ways. Increasing density, Thymed springs, thick walls... All sorts of ways to do it.

What can you do with thymed springs? That sounds interesting...

yes Chronos. there is ways of doing it, but has it ever crossed your mind it would be most convenient to have a tool for it?

Yes, but that takes away all the challenge of making a perfect one (even though you can't make a completely perfect one). What's the point of it if there's no challenge? It isn't even that hard. Just save one as a Phunlet and scale it to fit what you need. :|

It'd be more convient to have an ELEPHANT BUTTON to make an elephant, but that doesn't mean we need one.

ok for the sake of argument. why is there a rotating joint? why is there a spring tool? you can make springs in the game, but theres still a tool. i think all this argument is, is your guys inability to admit that there actually something wrong with algodoo. and if there was nothing wrong y is this topic here?

one couldnt make a spring without hinges...
plus you know the polygon counts

the thing is that these two things are very practical and inefficient without a tool
HOWEVER if there was a piston tool it would not change performance over a properly made piston.
(proper implies higher density and no friction)

BTW: the reason the topic is here is because one new person hasnt figured out all the tricks

i do agree with you that there shouldn't be a tool for everything be this is such a seemingly obvious thing to put in there. its not completely stupid like some other things, not pointing fingers.
