Would it be within my license to uninstall 1.8.5 and use the license key to unlock 1.9.4? Or would I need to buy another license?

No one else had to buy a new license to use it. You also don't even need to uninstall 1.8.5.

Yes, but using the same license key on two programs doesn't seem legal... but then again, it is the same program...

Well if you had to, you would be required to, or else the program wouldn't work. Plus, this is a beta. If they do make you buy a new key, it wouldn't be until the full release.

I didn't do anything special to unlock the beta or 1.8.5. So I assume that it's legal.

Downloading the beta to the computer where you have the earlier version installed should let the beta be unlocked by default. There is no need to uninstall the old version.
