I read the FAQ but I don't quite understand. Do you always get updates that extend the functionality of the software?

You will get all updates for free until the next major release (Algodoo 2.0) this may take 5 years it may be released by the end of this year no one knows.

Mystery is correct!

Algoryx has said that all updates will be free until the next major release.

though, chances are we will be able to cheaply upgrade our license when that time comes.

Yes, ALL minor updates adding bug fixes, increasing performance or adding a couple of new features here and there will be free (assuming you've legally purchased an Algodoo license). However, once a major release of the next version is made (i.e. Algodoo 2.0), then you will have to pay. Whilst I don't think it has been fully confirmed/denied, I would guess you will get a special deal to upgrade to Algodoo 2 for a smaller price if you bought the first one.
