Postby emilk » Wed Aug 17, 2011 2:02 pm

The latest beta has a long list of fixes, tweaks and news:

* NEW: You can now select a material in the right-side menu, and all new objects will get that material.
* NEW: Added icon for resetting to default material.
* NEW: Added sliders for controlling strength of chains.
* NEW: Added button for reloading a scene in the save scene widget.
* NEW: Added button to clear file filter field.
* NEW: Added checkbox in force visualization menu controlling if Algodoo may use a slightly different solver when visualizing forces so as to improve force arrow stability.
* NEW: Scenes and scenelets can now be renamed in the scene browser.
* NEW: Added "New scene" button to scene widget.
* NEW: Added "Check all"/"Uncheck all" buttons to collision menu.
* NEW: New color picker!
* NEW: You can now set water color in the appearance menu (when some water is selected).
* NEW: Options to draw arrow components and/or angles.
* NEW: Checkbox for turning kinetic panning on/off.
* NEW: Added slider for controlling plot time span.
* NEW: Drag tool has sliders for strength and max force.
* NEW: Drag tool checkbox for dragging center of mass.
* NEW: Added buttons for hiding the on-screen menus.

* IMP: Shortened titles for the submenus of the edit menu.
* IMP: Window names of the right hand side menus now explain what you are changing settings for (selected or new).
* IMP: Material menu now shows currently selected material(s).
* IMP: Made glass more translucent.
* IMP: Changed default laser color to be a random fully saturated color.
* IMP: Fixed filtering and sorting for folders in scene/scenelet browser.
* IMP: Removed title bar from file menu, and made immovable.
* IMP: A step can now be clicked in a lesson to jump directly to the step.
* IMP: Lowered default chain strength to 1e5 (making them softer, but more stable).
* IMP: Slider values now use a nicer form of scientific notation for large numbers. "12000000" will now display as "1.2 * 10^7" (instead of "1.200000000e+007").
* IMP: Algodoo will now guess Algobox ID for scenes downloaded from Algobox based on file name.
* IMP: More collision layers.
* IMP: When moving a spring end point, the spring will not re-attach to anything until the move is complete.
* IMP: Springs can attach a geometry to itself now.
* IMP: Rope breakage much better now: a rope will break at only one point per time step.
* IMP: Move to front/back undoable.
* IMP: Nicer plot window.
* IMP: Tool cursor hide when mouse is over a window.
* IMP: When selected, all objects will now show in some way, even if very small or very thin.
* IMP: Adjusted strength of refracted light, as light is broken up into the colors of the rainbow. This makes rainbows dimmer and more beautiful. Set with App.rainbowSplitMult.

* FIX: Fixed some issues with the SimControl popup menus.
* FIX: Clicking a phunlet will open it in middle of scene instead of under mouse.
* FIX: Bug where the borders around non-geometries would sometimes be larger than the objects.
* FIX: material velocity.

* FIX: Right hand side visualization menu bugs.
* FIX: Some issues with scenelet drag-dropping into and out of folder other than the default.

* FIX: Geometry airFrictionMult should no longer affect air bouyancy.
* FIX: Kibibyte unit symbol (KiB instead of kiB).
* FIX: Bug causing the button "toggle" state to... toggle.
* FIX: Backspace once against deletes objects rather than undoing.
* FIX: The undo/redo menus now opens with the most recent items closest even when the Sim control menu is at the top (default is bottom).
* FIX: Rare Thyme problem with integers larger than 2147483647 not being parsable. They are now treated as floats.
* FIX: System.maxFPS not working.

Wow... This makes me more impatient than I've been in a long time.

In a few days, the school will begin re-dispersing the laptops to my class.

I'm currently using a Linux machine, so I can't use 1.9.9. But the school computers will have Windows.

This looks so AWESOME!!! ERRGH! (The above, and 1.8.5 doesn't seem to work right on my Linux)

Finally, Kilinich, I really hope materialVelocity isn't one of them. I know it's listed in the Fix column, but...

not fully looked at it, but thanks for another amazing upgrade!

The new color selector is awesome!!
And new collision layers are great to all the advanced algodooers!

Also, do you know what the schedule for the linux release is?
I would ask joel via PM or skype.... But he never seams to reply.

Love the new version. Great...
I especially like the option to disable Kinetic Panning. Much more controllable.

Since I think 1.9.8 Algodoo has been lagging horribly on my machine (MBP C2D/2.16GHz/3GB RAM/OSX 10.6.8). Sometimes it works fine and then sometimes the display framerate drops to like 5-10, and the physics framerate drops with it. I'm not sure it's physics-thread lag, though.

What do you need to figure out what the problem might be?

Could you send in a bug report from within Algodoo when the framerate is low?
Be sure to include both the logfile and the config. A screenshot and the scene could also be helpful.

The biggest problem I can see (now that I've got it up and running) is that the Undo thing is constantly being spammed with Undo Moves. It seems to stem from both moving objects and changing zDepths.
Why the latter causes a minisave, and why each one minisaves, I cannot say.

I love the release and I especially love the additional collision layers. One problem with this version is that Algodoo is much more demanding in power. Now I find lag in scenes that didn't have any lag in previous versions. It also slows down other progams to a halt. I really hope all this power is due to a better pysics engine. If not, I needs to be fixed NOW.

Mag8328: old scenes should not be slower - if anything, they should be quicker. If you have a specific scene which is slower in 1.9.x than in 1.8.5, please provide a link to it!

Sorry for taking a while to get back here, but good to know others have the same problem. I'm seeing lots of stuff that's slower in 1.9 than 1.8.

One example is Kilinich's bomber game, which is super-complicated but runs fine in 1.8, the new 1.9-compatible version lags horribly though. http://www.algodoo.com/algobox/details.php?id=51510 and http://www.algodoo.com/algobox/details.php?id=56999

RaRaMalum's robotic centipede also lags: http://www.algodoo.com/algobox/details.php?id=56705

Those are both 1.9-only scenes, though. I haven't been using Algodoo a whole lot to be able to find this or that random scene that lags.

Both scenes are working great on my Mac, and the bomber game is actually faster in 1.9 for me.
A bug report from within Algodoo when the scene is slow might give us a clue of what is going on.

I bet all performance problems is because of graphics card.
For example 1.9.x stops working on my old notebook with Mobility Radeon 9000 but 1.8.5 was fine.

Will any attempt be made to address the problems with some cards or are too few people affected for it to be fixed. I ask because I still cant run 1.9 at all and dont want to buy a new card just for Algodoo and then find out its not the card anyway.

I found the system requirements folder and by that my computers meets all requirements. I would love to run the new version! It looks great.

Yes, that would make sense, I have an old-ish MBP with a Radeon X1600, and it mostly appears to be the graphics that are slow. Still, 1.8.5 worked fine with AA and hardware water, so something clearly changed. Are there any new high-end graphics that I could turn off?
