Algodoo Beta 1.9.5 Released!

Postby Joel » Sun May 08, 2011 8:09 pm

Hello everyone!

It is time for a beta for the new version of Algodoo. We have worked on alot of new functionality for this version and are happy to present it to you!

You can find it here

1.9.4 - 1.9.5
=================
* FIX: Bug with some graphic cards that did not load textures correctly has been fixed.
* FIX: Thrusters does not reset their direction when changing their attachment any more.
* FIX: The selection menu also contains thrusters
* IMP: End points of springs now work better, along with selection of these.
* IMP: New textures for the default skin.
* FIX: Fixed a bug that could cause the tracking of geometries to be unchecked.
* FIX: Fixed a bug that caused a spring to be deleted when attached to two fixated geoms.
* FIX: Several fixes to the side menues, and how they behave.

We know that this version has not fixed all important bugs yet. If you had problems with textures in 1.9.4, please try this version, as we hope to have fixed this issue.

New features include:

Algobox integration - Visit Algobox, upload and download scenes through Algodoo.
Drag-and-drop - Drag images from your browser into Algodoo, and easily access and save Scenelets between scenes by dragging them.
New ropes - With a new direct solver (check out Emils blog on the new ropes here.
Thrusters - The new trusters allow you to add a constant force to objects.
Improved interface - A more inviting interface has been created and important settings found in the Options menu have been made more accessable. The spring tool has also been improved to move individual ends of the spring.
Bug fixes - Yeah, some of those too.

As this is a beta, it is not as stable as the current release version, and any feedback of bugs and issues you can give us on the beta would be great. Since the last version we have made some pretty big under the hood changes to how different windows are handled, so expect issues there. We have also noticed some problems with markup since these changes, mostly related with the console, that we are still working on, but please report these aswell, to help us in improving Algodoo.

Hoping for lot of good feedback :)

thanks for the update

problems ive found so far;

Algobox browser is too big for my screen (1366x768) (1110x512 for actual algodoo window)
cant use "tab" listing in console without a starting phase, tab completion works fine.

e.g, tab with "system." lists nothing (blanks visible section of console) but tab with "system.r" works fine

Well I'm just glad now Algodoo closes instantly. Before, I had to wait a solid 10 seconds before Algodoo actually closed after I pressed the X.

The Mac version is unfortunately not working well enough for a beta release, yet.

Hmm, the resolution problem must be fixed somehow. The size of the window is set to 840x768, but it might of course be to small if the Algodoo window is too small.

The console bug is know and we are trying to fix it.

Have you tried switching to full screen yet?
It's instantaneously!

viewtopic.php?f=20&t=3993#p45603

The above URL is where I put my bug reports.

Also, I found that the Load Scene, Load Phunlet, and Algobox windows are too big to fit the screen. And they can only be dragged by the top bar.

Also, the Use As Chain button does not work.

I just look at the script menu and saw a few variable that suggest that we may have some simulted form of electrical energy (mainly, isbattery and rechargeablebattery :D ).

does this mean that algodoo will be getting some form of simulated electrical energy?

Scenelets (called phunlets before) are added by selecting the objects you want to make into scenelet of and drag them with the move tool into the scenelet browser.
The mouse pointer should have plus sign in the corner when you are on top of the scenelet browser.

Oh, you guys are too curious, that should not have been in there!

We are always trying out new feature that could be added to Algodoo and electricity is something we have experimented with internally, but it is not yet working well enough even for a beta.
It will therefore not be added in the next release of Algodoo.

Stay tuned!

Great work, but i have to say i really don't like the message at startup, way to cheesey and gets lost in translation so mabye a change could be made. And i like the old UI better, is there a way to remove the load, save and open panel becasue alll that stuff can be done from the file menu?

Love the thrusters and i'm working on using them in my next project.

A great upgrade - good job. It's nice to see such a frequently updated program with new features as diverse as these.

Looks good. Only suggestion would be a professional theme. Slims down the menus and makes it feel more like a tool, because right now the menus feel little cluttered and excessively huge. Maybe an option to disable tooltips as well. Also, instead of hovering over items to see their advanced options, maybe make it right-click, for the sake of responsiveness and so the options don't appear when we don't want them to.

Looks awesome though. Nice work you guys. :)

Hmm... Is there a batteryCharge variable or similar? Because that, with some added Thyme, could be used to make a fully-functioning battery. You know, batteryCharge = batteryCharge - 1; [do some other action]...

And it could also be used for storing variables, like ControllerAcc is often used for.

Also, another bug, when you load a new scene, it will preserve sim.running from the previous scene. I find it a lot more helpful if a new scene automatically sets sim.running = false.

Also, when you open a scene, it will open the Save Scene menu, showing the author and description. A little weird, but okay. However, if the Scene default menu (the one with the Algobox button) is on the right, two-thirds of the pop-up menu are not shown.

Good upgrade. Except that interface, it looks like Algodoo it turning from serious program for game&work into childish toy for schoolchildren... Those awful menus with enormous buttons that closes a lot of space, settings are used not so often to make menu for them. Maybe, I'm too critical and conservative... Also, game crashes when i try to use hinges or chains...
