A Big Day for Algodoo
Today is a big day for Algodoo. We have not one, but four big announcements!
The first news is that you now can buy Algodoo for iPad! Yes, it is finally here! We have also released Algodoo 2.1, with a lot of improvements to usability and performance. The third news is a completely redesigned webpage at http://www.algodoo.com - take a look! It is so much nicer. And last but not least: Algodoo is now a free download for anyone and everyone! Why? We want more people using Algodoo. A lot more! So go tell your friends to get Algodoo 2.1 for free at the new http://www.algodoo.com!
But - if you want to support further development, you can also buy Algodoo for iPad, or for Mac on the Mac App Store. It's up to you.
Anyway, I hope you all are as excited about these news as we are!

I will certainly recommend Algodoo to educational institutions I know - the truth is not that they could not afford the software before, but purchasing and maintaining the licences involved so much red tape that few people bothered... It is certainly generous of you!
One question: does the release differ in any way from 2.1.0 b13?

I received an email stating that the new version is free. I paid for version 1.8.5. Will this new version be fully functional or will I need to purchase it again?

Re: A Big Day for Algodoo
When you made Algodoo commercial (which was when it was renamed from Phun, if I recall correctly), you mentioned that you didn't want to make it open source because you expected it to develop better if you could make money from it.
Now that Algodoo is free again, how does it look for open source?

Re: A Big Day for Algodoo
Normally I would be upset when I paid for something that is now being offered for free. However, buying Algodoo has been such good value that it doesn't matter - I would buy it now anyway to support the developers and their awesome work. Keep the updates coming :)

Is the free version a trial of some sort? If you buy it, are there any differences?

Re: A Big Day for Algodoo
With 2.1.0, Algodoo has all the functionality of a 2D game engine.
I tell you emilk, Algodoo is more than a worthy competitor for Torque 2D, Gamemaker, etc.
I am currently using Torque 2D and making games that are a little more complicated than they were back sophomore year of highschool:
My experience with Algodoo was really the jumpstart into the field and it is just so easy to make amazing things. With the ability to distribute games separately and load scenes easily with scripts (to have multiple levels), developers age 10 to 100 could be making games and sharing them with the world (for free or not).
By the way I might buy an iPad just so I can play Algodoo on it...

Algodoo is 100% free now (For windows and Mac, if you download from the website).
Purchasing Algodoo 2.1.0 from the store is the same as downloading the version off here, they are the exact same, only purchasing from the store does essentially act like donation to the company.
