Algodoo Chatroom up!

Postby JDKmedeng » Sat Dec 05, 2009 8:43 pm

Hey guys,

I just started a chatroom for all Algodoo members. It is http://algochat.webs.com/
You don't even need to sign up, since you can set your name in the room. But it is advised that you do. All you need to do press Set Name to set your name, and if you want to make a username you can login with, just press Sign Up after pressing Set Name - it's really easy, and you don't even need to activate your account by clicking a link they send you in an e-mail.
This is where Algodoo members can chat instantly with one another. Discuss anything from your latest creations, or simply hold an off-topic discussion.
The chatroom service (Chatango) is really helpful since if you post a URL of a picture or a video, it will show the picture or video right there. And the chatroom layout is pretty simple and intuitive.
So come stop by!

Enjoy!

We have several, but Sonic posted the most popular.

Same with xat.

Again, same with xat.

Thanks for that.

Anyway, I really think the chatroom should look more professional - aesthetics are important. Chatango looks better and has, arguably, better features.
I also improved the chatroom - the new URL is www.algochat.webs.com

Thanks.

You don't get it, do you...
Do you know what an improvement is?
And quit posting your childish facepalm pictures. You're annoying.

Oh yeah, and Chronos...

I am aware of the xat chatroom.

Same with xat.

I never claimed that the easy signup for my chatroom somehow made it better...

Isn't this the definition of a chatroom? -.-

If it will, it will.

Anyway, I would ask that people just check out the chatroom to see for yourself how it is. (http://algochat.webs.com/)

thanks

Guys, I tried out the chat and it is definitely better than xat.

1. When you click on a link you don't have a banner
2. It has a longer chat history
3. Profanity is not censored
4. No (really high) length limit on messages.

Just #1 makes this new chat worth it, I hate that stupid banner.

Well, I'll go there and see then. Probably won't be good.

Also, Ivan, you can turn the censors off on xat.

on my wii it loads the chat but won`t connect
xat works perfect (exept for the background going weird and it took a little longer than normal to load)

Mhm, Xat was poorly made. Horrible action script and poor web site design.
None of these chat room will be necessary soon with Google Wave coming soon.

All I can see here is a good chatroom getting uselessly shot down but the terrible tandem of Chronos and Sonic. Seriously guys, give it a chance will you? I don't see a reason why you two need to make xat 'mighty and superior' when it really isn't.
Millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. Something terrible has happened.

Does the new chat have a drawing app where you can draw with other people? Does it have a youtube app where you can watch youtube videos? Does it have a (albiet poorly made) chess app? Can you add smilies and sound clips? No, no, no, and no!

No, it does not have a drawing app, though there are widgets out there that can allow this (and MUCH more).
Yes, you just post the URL of the video, like I said in the first post.
Again, I can add game apps, though I don't think that's necessary for a chatroom - we will see about this.
Yes you can add smilies (I don't think you've even visited the website, since this is quite obvious if you go there) and sound clips.

The point is that this chatroom I made can allow much more and is much more versatile, since it is based on a web site that allows HTML. The xat chat is not. Now it is my turn to ask a few questions...

Does the old chat allow video clips to be seen in the same window, without having to decrease your screen space by half by opening up a giant tab? No!
Does the old chat allow pictures to be posted that can be clicked in the same window with ease? No!
Does the old chat even look good? NO!
Does the old chat allow any online embeddable app to be added to the page? No!
Can the old that be turned into a thriving online community? By the looks of it, no!
Is the old chat even a reasonable chat that makes Algodoo and Phun look professional and simply aesthetically attractive for newcomers and also for existing members? No!! This is important! You wouldn't really admire a poorly made forum that looks like a child threw together, would you? You would rather have one that looks like it does now.
Is the old chat convenient (i.e. can you type a lot at once? is profanity uncensored? can you see a long chat history?, etc.)? No!

I could go on and on about why the new chat is better. The web site is simply more versatile than xat.

I liked the chat up until now. When you click in the text box it expands it to like six times its size and you can't press return to send the message anymore. You have to hit send. Please fix this.

I'm on it.

EDIT: Oh and I forgot to mention. In my last post, I should've added:

Does the old chat have a featured scene section? No!

The featured scene section is where a scene of good quality is chosen to be visible to others on the web site. It's kind of like an award, and it promotes that scene :)
(We choose this by looking at the recent scenes on Algobox and looking for ones that are rated pretty high (typically >/=7), and from there we choose which ones people seem to like the most, based on comments, etc.)

This is one of the many ways the new chat can be modified as a web site to make a sort of "mini community" of Algodoo/Phun members.
