Laser computer standards

Postby Conundrumer » Tue Sep 01, 2009 1:24 am

Some bright people may be thinking about making computers with laser. I can predict they would end up using a lot of thyme. However, that is not necessary.
During beta testing, soon after thyme scripting was added to lasers, I made the beam splitter.
The beam splitter changes state upon hit from a laser. One state lets the laser through, the other reflects the laser.
After discovering this, I realized it could be used to make any computer.
I already made the basic logic gates using these beam splitters, but you are free to play around with them to make more effective logic gates and other modules.
It gets laggy after enough lasers, unfortunately. I thought of powering the logic gates using energy lasers as "electricity".

Properties of lasers and the beam splitter:
The laser fires at a rate around 68 hz at 100% real time at normal sim speed
The beam splitter splits a single laser beam into 2 equally intense laser beam at half the rate.
The beam splitter changes state when it is hit by an odd number of lasers
The beam splitter doesn't change state when hit by an even number of lasers
Lasers that have been refracted (split) still count as one laser when hitting the beam splitter.

Note: the logic gates were generated from pure experimentation and observation. If I were to make them without guess work, I would need to take a course in discrete mathematics.

If there are enough people interested in optical computation, I can make this into a collab.
Once a particular module is created, it can be replaced with thyme code to reduce lag, so we can say we use one line of thyme for any computer we make.

Disregard that previous post, I'm going to make tihs a colab right away. I have so many ideas on how lasers and one line of thyme can make a real working conventional computer

I've already made the collab. it's called the Algodoo Computer Collab [ACC].

I hope to use lasers because they are much better at holding information. I have created a adding machine already working at 100hz that counts to 127.

lol, i thought about this posibility yesterday, but i had only half an hour to make it so i didn't bother.

edit; i really like the binary counter, can i make it into a LCD display? , or have you thought of that allready...

Your and gate is a bit faulty, sometimes gives a positive output for a split second with only one input, that could be quite nasty in a larger logic system.

wonders of laggy old machines, i get to see these things :P

Yea I know. I'm looking for a way to get rid of that little blip. The same happens for the OR gate, except gives a negative output for a split second.
