Nuclear Fusion Simulation

Postby Gear97 » Thu Feb 24, 2011 8:31 pm

Well. Long time without posting scenes. Because school started. Well when I was reading some nuclear physics I got this idea to make scene to show of a simple way how the nuclear fusion happens ;)

Have you found a way to somehow turn this into an engine?

Well it is very difficult to extract energy from moving neutrons :problem:... I can't figure out how to use its power but I will try something if it is possible ;)

maybe if you put it in a smaller space and the free neutrons would hit the walls and somehow move a gear or something?

Well. To be realistic. Neutrons go trough most things like phantoms you cannot use them to increase internal pressure in a chamber and work like a combustion engine...

Would that be difficult to script? Because it sounds like it!

No :) I just need to think how things are going to work. Here is an explanation: A reactor starts the magnetic compression (like in this scene), then the neutrons phase through the walls of the reactor but there is a layer of heavy water. Heavy water absorbs neutrons and starts to get hotter and hotter, the water then is pumped to a heat transfer to heat normal water that will power a steam turbine ;)
It sounds complex :wtf: But I think I can do it :D
I just need to script heavy water particles and normal water particles.

So what is the difference between nuclear fission and nuclear fusion and which is more powerful?

Nuclear fission is when you split very big nuclei (uranium, plutonium...) in half,
while nuclear fusion is when you stick two very small nuclei (hydrogen) together to get a bigger (but still very small) nucleus (helium).
Nuclear fusion is a LOTLOTLOTLOTLOTLOTLOT more energetic.

And Gear97, why don't you capture HEAT by releasing it as a bunch of high-velocity circles instead of as a noncolliding tracer that can't really heat anything?
Matthias Wandel is epic, in my humble opinion.

The explosion (aka tracer) is merely for giving the idea of power and about 80 % of the fusion energy is the form of neutrons the others 20 % are the "recoil energy" in the new helium atom.
I will try to reproduce the energy harvesting as real as I can. And in a nuclear fusion reactor you do not extract heat directly from the plasma but from the neutrons that fly away.
Hope I solved your question :)
PS: Neutrons are pretty annoying particles for me because they dont have eletrical charge

I think what I kinda meant was, Release heat as a tracer and a bunch of little circles that can actually HEAT THE PLASMA to make the whole thing more realistic.

I think real fusion uses heat generated by the reaction to heat hydrogen atoms to they can collide with each other and keep the reaction going.

And one would still think that neutrons play little role in producing mechanical energy.

However, one has done little research on the subject.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ9j2cajRo4&feature=player_detailpage
Wikipedia -> " The (intermediate) result of the fusion is an unstable 5He nucleus, which immediately ejects a neutron with 14.1 MeV. The recoil energy of the remaining 4He nucleus is 3.5 MeV,[citation needed] so the total energy liberated is 17.6 MeV." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fusion
Neutrons are the main energy source :) But you are right with the idea of trying to add heat to simulation! This will solve the problem that some atoms remain without fusing with each other (in my scene)
I dont really need to add a bunch of circles a just need to spawn the helium-4 with some speed ;)
But keep in mind. You cannot use the heat in the plasma you can only get energy from the neutrons. As the video says there is no material that withstand the plasma temperatures(and the plasma will cool down).
I won't improve the heat feature in this scene but in the next one, where I will make a functional reactor.
