Nudging

Postby Under Ground » Tue Jan 18, 2011 10:26 pm

I think 'Nudging' should be implemented into Algodoo.
For example, when a shape is selected, and you use the arrow keys (Or whatever) to move it slightly, say only a millimetre. This would greatly increase accurately when lining objects up.
just a idea :thumbup:

Gravity = 0!
Airfrictionmult = like 9000!
Controlleracc = 0.1!
If you care enough do it yourself
Like Algodoo needs any more key commands.

Think about how annoying this will be when playing games. After you accidentally select the background then mash the up key to jump and then watch your face as you're like WHAT THE SHIT HAS I DONE!

if it was re-implimened, it would have to have a modifier key (a.g. Shift) to be able to do it

I fully support. :thumbup:

I think there should be about six modifier keys in one ares of the keyboard.
Maybe it will only activate nudging if a geom is selected and you press:
Code: Select all
Left_Shift Left_Ctrl Left_Alt A S D

and then and only then will the selected object move a millimeter or a centimeter or whatever (depending on the zoom level) when you press the arrow keys.

This way, nobody will ever figure out that there is a nudge function.
And all will be back to normal. :D

Support, IF it can be toggled on and off. As with most things, some people want it others don't, you need a way to please both.

Support. I agree with Rrobba; if this function is implemented in Algodoo/Phun, there should be a toggle key, and it should be easily accessible, not hidden away in some obscure options menu. It would also be great if we got thyme control over this function.

Grid is supposed to be used to line things up. Sorry, no support.

grid is only useful when objects are over a specific size,
Nudging would help for some situations where the grid won't let you get in to the exact place you need it to be...

Exactly. The rest of this post was typed before I saw electronicboy's post.

I think this is the only way to create a little circle with an area of one millimeter.
:arrow: Make a fairly large box with the grid.
:arrow: Make a sort of L-shaped polygon that completely covers the box.
:arrow: Use the grid so the inside corner of the L lies on exactly the same point as one of the corners of the box.
:arrow: Nudge the L one mm to the left and one mm down, so there is a 1mm square of the box showing.
:arrow: CSG-Subtract the L, then delete it.
:arrow: You now have a very tiny square. Select it, GeometryActions>TransformToCircle.
:arrow: Set its restitution to 1, friction to 0, and density to .01.
:arrow: Clone it a bunch of times, so each one is surrounded by about 10 square millimeters worth of open space.
:arrow: Now, try to build a comparable ideal gas model without nudging.

Build a large model and scale it down a bunch! But really, it would be much easier to do this task, and others like it if we had a nudge tool. :D
