call me crazy, but I think this would be rather handy. there is nothing more frustrating for me than to try to deselect a hinge (or two) that is behind the beam that is in front of the box that I'm trying to edit

Maybe a "show only selected" button, which basically would be a layer that only selected items are on? As for selecting something behind, maybe hold down the mouse button to get a menu of all the objects that are under the cursor.
