I still have problem how to de-select all if background is not reachable.
There must be hotkey or maybe better back to one-click select single object.

Context menu on tablet can be called but click and hold for a while.

1.7.5, [Deselect everything] command exists in Selection menu. I think this is for solving your issue.
It doesn't work, though... [v1.7.5]Deselect everything does nothing except warnings
