Tower mover contest

Postby RA2lover » Sat Oct 24, 2009 12:18 am

The goal, should you acept it, is to bring the tower from the ground box to the top box, with as little damage as possible to it.

Rules
1-Must initially fit in the build box(internal area only) and be able to finish fitting in it(after moving the tower)
2-Thyme is allowed, as long as there is no spawning, or geometry wide changes which have an effect ,changing the physical properties of an object(density, airfriction, refractive index, restitution, material velocity, collision, friction...)
3-No controller accelerators as controllers, they are still allowed for thyme variable holding
Must be controlled by hinges only(this means no alternate engines/actuators)
4-Changing collision groups of tower and Target box is allowed, as long as both have the same collision groups and no self-collision(plane should NOT, as then it would be too easy)
5-Entries should be uploaded as a response to the scene

Grading
Speed (20) - Is the machine able to move it quickly?
Tower damage(25) - Does the tower gets damaged/destroyed in the process?
Originality(15) - Does it have neat mechanisms? Try to keep it as simple(or as complicated) as possible
Ease to control(15) - Is the machine automated(something like "Press enter" counts as so), or it needs a skilled operator to do it's job nicely? If automated, Is it reliable all the time?
Bonuses(25) - Is the machine actually funny(or nonsense, when there is too much complexity) to watch when it does its job?
Total points = 100

this sounds interresting
but does the machine hav just to bring the tower there and then is good? or have it to move back so the tower stays free on the block?

It thing it wouldn't work without destroying the tower.
But we'll see.

I think destroying the tower is more subjective (ie, it you lose a couple bricks, you won't be graded as poorly as someone who has the top half of the tower fall apart.)

@tank2333: the thing the machine is intended to do is to move the tower upon the platform, then return to the starting box without the tower

@izacque: yes, it's subjective, but there are methods of doing that without destroying the tower at all

Doesn't it have to be?
Edit: Also, the tower collides with the target box...

you should make something like a forklift right?
just lift the tower and place it on the target box

Disqualified due to plane collision group change
4-Changing collision groups of tower and Target box is allowed, as long as both have the same collision groups and no self-collision(plane should NOT, as then it would be too easy)

I know that's stupid question but I want to ensure: is water spawning rocket engine forbidden? (because i wanted to make flying tower mover)

that's a no. not allowed. using some sort of near infinite fuel rocket engine(Example) with motors to determine fuel consumption rate, is ok.

Tank2333's entry
well, that would almost be disqualified. it exceeds buildbox's boundaries by about 2 cm, but, as i didn't specify what perimeter should be considered as the build box, i'll let that pass , as well as other entries
Speed (16) - A skilled operator can get the machine out of its box, move the tower onto the platform and fit back into the buildbox in around 90 seconds. My par time = 100~110 seconds
Tower damage(22) - Tower gets leaned when getting it out of the platform. my guess is that the seal is too tight, making collisions to appear badly
Originality(12) - The unfolding and folding process can leave certain people without sense of what's happening. a part of the mechanism appears, easily sighted by certain people, able to guess what is the mechanism, easily.
Ease to control(11) - Not much complicated to control as most controls are toggle-styled. hovewer, the piston-based telescopic extender  has the tendency to go down without inputs, because of too much stress in its joints.
Bonuses(15) - looks like a generic forklift, but the method of making it to fit in the buildbox are remarkably complex. lost some points by not fitting in the build box too.
Total points = 76/100

thx for the good explonation ^^
yeah may i could have made it fully fits into the build box but it would be a pain in the ass ^^
but that the piston-based telescopic extender  is going down seems to be a problem with the engine
and i couldnt think of how to solve that by now

i may build an improved version so can i add a snd entry?

Can I make something that's folds so it fits in the box, than unfolds, does it's job, then folds up again?
I do stuff and break things. You know how it is.
