Off Road Vehicle Contest - With Engine (Phun/Algodoo)

Postby Dare » Sat Oct 08, 2011 7:11 am

Hi everyone.

It's been a long time since any decent contest has been held here on the forums, but that is about to change with this one.

This is a remake of Kilinich's Contest that was held about 2 years ago.

You have an 8 cylinder parallel motorbike-style engine which you are to use in building your off road vehicle. Unfortunately the engine is not too powerful, so you may have to work around that with transmissions and light-weight vehicles. The course is 1 km long.

So let's get to it.

Rules:
  • No engine or scene modification, you are allowed to mirror the engine if needed.
  • A minimum weight of 500 kg (including engine).
  • Must fit inside the red box (3x6 m).
  • Vehicle must start from standing still.
  • No other engines or assistance.
  • Motors are only allowed for functions such as suspension and gearbox.
  • All outside parts of vehicle must collide with course.
  • Maximum wheel/track friction of 2.5.
  • No attraction to ground or directional controllers.
  • No flying/jump extender devices based on spawning/disattracrion/air friction.
  • If using Algodoo, no modification of the inertiaMultiplier.
  • Your vehicle must have at least 15 parts not including engine - you cannot simply attach 2 wheels to the engine.
You Are Allowed To:
  • Use laser rays of any work range (for detecting landscape, smart suspension, position detector, etc).
  • Place engine anywhere with any angle (within box).
  • Use as many wheels/tracks as you need.
  • Use any type of suspension/transmission/gearbox.
  • Any scripting, use lasers, etc.
  • Use stabilization/active suspension/jumping devices based on mechanical design.
  • Use air friction devices for stabilization.
How to Win:
The winner is simply the person who completes the course the fastest with their vehicle. There will be 2 winners, one from Algodoo section and one from Phun section.

I will be running the vehicles in order to get the times on my computer, so it will be fair.

The time is automatically displayed at the end of the course.

Award:
You get bragging rights among the community, and also I will make you something if you wish.

End Time:
This contest will officially end on November 7, 2011. After this date the scores will be posted (if not before this date) and no more entries allowed.

The Scene:
Here is everything you will need:

Rating: rated 5
Filesize: 62.86 kB
Comments: 1
Ratings: 3
download

Press Enter to begin your race. For the engine, it is Right Arrow to start engine in the right direction, and Down Arrow to brake engine (toggle).

Questions and Edits:
If you have any questions, or find any bugs with the scene/engine that need fixing, please post here so we can make this contest the best it can be!

Oh, your vehicle must be posted as scene response to the original scene! Otherwise it will not be counted.

Start your engines! :)

When it says "no engine modifications" I'm assuming it's alright to chuck a C-gear on the output/fixate engine to frame?

Oh, and does it have to be automatic?

Can we fit brakes to the wheels? Also are we allowed to use a braking hinge as a clutch on the engine.

Ravenpluker, fixating objects to others actually effects stuff like hinges and other things attached so i would suggest using eg, 4 hinges to attach one to another.

Yes, that is fine. As long as it does not optimise the speed of the engine.
Ravenplucker wrote:Oh, and does it have to be automatic?

Dare wrote:

Already stated in the rules. Be sure to read thoroughly. :)
Nxdt wrote:Can we fit brakes to the wheels?

Yes you may, but why would you need to use brakes in a straight line race? ;)
Nxdt wrote:Also are we allowed to use a braking hinge as a clutch on the engine.

Yes, as stated in the rules once more:

Good advice here.

Well, you may have meant any type of automatic transmission/gearbox.

Just clarifying!

Hold on everyone - I'm just going to edit the scene, some parts too hard.

Okay, it's slightly easier now.

Pah, how fast do you think we work?!

I need at least 4 years.

I've already built 3 reasonably simple models that can finish the course in around ~ 140 seconds. How long could it take you?

The main problem is that I am distracted very easily.

When's the closing date?

November 7th. And don't forget to post as a scene response to starting scene.

Would something like this scene be allowed if it were powered by the engine included in the contest scene? It *technically* doesn't jump/fly with spawning/negative attraction/airfrictionmult, and is not based on inertiamult.

Fixates always create problems. Use Geometry actions > Glue together, or use hinges.

Of course it's not allowed, it's just driving through mid-air using some form of witchcraft. Please make the wheels in contact with the ground most of the time (exceptions include bouncing off road and jumps).

Can I make the left-most wheel inside the engine collide with a group and alter its friction value, I know that it is editing the engine but I don't see how it would be any advantage, it is basically just to tidy up my design.

And is there any limit to friction for internal gearing ?

That should be fine.

And no friction limit on anything but wheels/tracks.

Agreed.

Dare, are thrusters allowed if they don't propel the vehicle in any way?

Dare, I would like to enter this contest, but the scene actually lags to f*** on my PC. Honestly it is massive, look here;

Code: Select all
93.0%  of simulation time
Simulation time = 20.84 s
300 bodies
484 geometries
0 particles
1308 narrow collision tests // Whhhaaaat!!!
683 contacts
26 constraints
Running at 100 Hz
FPS: 39.9

Same here. You need to simplify scene.

Don't be so quick to say that, guys (especially Kilinich ;) ).

Look here.

Kilinich's V24 Contest:
98.5 of simulation time
Simulated time = 3.42 s
276 bodies
428 geometries
0 particles
1259 narrow collision tests
672 contacts
16 springs
0 cables
2 constraints
Running at 100 Hz
FPS: 59.3

Dare's 8 Cyl Contest:
97.7 of simulation time
Simulated time = 3.42 s
300 bodies
540 geometries
0 particles
1420 narrow collision tests
647 contacts
0 springs
0 cables
27 constraints
Running at 100 Hz
FPS: 48.3

Difference is only minimal, not enough to stop you from entering entire contest...

Perhaps you can just build in Phun, or an earlier Algodoo? There really isn't much I can do to simplify without ruining the fun of the contest.

I''m running 1.9.9.9b, and it doesn't seem to lag all that much.

I think i'll run it in 1.9.9.9b as well, see how it goes as kilinich's contest ran fine, even with a 300 geom vehicle.

Edit; Updating my Graphics drivers to see if it helps.

Edit2; Base Scene runs 70% real time after updating drivers and Algodoo to RC4 Slight improvement, will see what it is like in 1.9.9.9b

Edit3; Base scene runs 100% real time but as soon as I import my vehicle it drops to 40%

Edit4; Tried to make a simpler vehicle, will maybe try to enter later on but still get lag.
