No, if it changes; still allow it to change, but have a notice explaining and that pressing a button will turn it back. Most complex mechanical scenes require a sim.frequency change.

Not particularly. Only mechanical scenes that involve very fast/powerful objects colliding. (like guns)

What about the "algodoo tour" group ? Scenes that are dedicated to show the features of Algodoo and as well the use of the menus and tools.
Another rule should be that everything you do must be well explained, like in the case of advanced thyme or advanced mechanics, everything must be have text boxes or any other method that rapidly explains what happens in the scene in a simple and understand-able form, so that new users can understand the scene. I think it is a nice rule, is not it ?
Gears are my favorite mechanism. Why do you think I have this username ? ;)
Make sure to spend some time to see my work http://www.algodoo.com/algobox/profile.php?id=96, just to kill sometime ;)

Explanation with text is nice idea.
However please remember there are a lot of people who cannot read English.
i.e. The scene which is simple and understandable without text should be the best. ;)

The hinges in the current version are giving me a headache. Are we expected to work around this (no complex mechanisms) or ignore it (use an older version of Algodoo)?

Go into the hinge script menu; legacyMode = 0. Done. I have this problem too.

Also, springs in 1.9 disappear in 1.8, so I'm told.

Also, where's the Thymechanical category?

I would suggest that only one entry is allowed per person, but that person can choose any scene on their Algobox, and change it at any time up to the beta release.

So, let's say that I upload a sequenced cannon and submit it for the Advanced Thyme category.
The next day, I upload a programmable computer, repeal my sequenced cannon, and submit the computer for the Advances Thyme category.
Day after that, I notice that nobody has submitted anything for Simple Thyme, so I whip up several kinds of increasingly complicated fireworks for that category. I then have my one entry in the Simple Thyme category.
Matthias Wandel is epic, in my humble opinion.

I think each scene should be judged on its own merits.

After all, this contest will be about quality, not giving everyone a fair go.

You've got a valid point, however, the amount of submitted scenes can not be to overwhelming. Rater quality from a user than quantity, but that should of course be true either way.

As a middle ground, maybe each user would only be able to submit one entry into each category?

Sounds good.

If they're short on scenes they can just send out another call anyway.

P.S. everyone who is suggesting things for the contest, keep suggesting! I'm just away for a week skiing and snowboarding (yes I can do both), so I can't be very active here. I'll get to the contest on Friday, that's when I get back.

Thanks for the great community input guys!

This may have been mentioned, but I would suggest broadening the sim.frequency rule to include all default variables.
More suggestions-
No using unsupported functions (edgeblur, bend, bendconstant) even to store values as they may not be present in later versions.
Maximum of 1 (one) Rube Goldberg contraption per user. Those things get old after a while.

When we (Kilinich, Paradigm, Conumdrummer, Tatt, myself and Someone else that I dont recall) were testing Phun 5.0 thru 5.28 just prior to Algodoo, we were asked to make scenes that could be included in the official scenes list. They were kind enuff to use my solar prominance scene that I made early in the testing. Every time a new version (As often as 2 or 3 versions a week) was given to us during testing, my solar scene had to be repaired so it would work with the changes made to the most recent version.
In fact that scene as it was in the official scenes list didnt work as well as it did with the beta version I originally used to build it. Im sure the same will happen to the scenes people make for this contest so I suggest people continue checking their entries to make sure every aspect still works as intended every time a new version is released.

@TC42: (written prior to Wild Bill's post)

Totally agreed.

I have a strong feeling that variables like those will still be there in the released version. Also, the "gun" on the default tank scene in 1.9.4/1.9.5 (dunno about 1.9.7) uses bend to keep it pointed in the same direction.

Seems to me like a Rube Goldberg would only fit into the Advanced Mechanical category, thus only one per user is kind of a given. Unless someone submits a Thymechanical Rube Goldberg...
And do sequenced cannons count for Rube Goldbergs? Especially if they are on the level of complexity of the Paragon Cannon?

No, Rube Goldberg contraptions do not include cannons. I just don't want fifty quadrillion rube goldberg machines. After a while, they just take up space and annoy people.

And what Wild Bill just said pretty much rules out rube goldberg machines anyway.

About those variables... Emil said that "They are not fully supported. Use them at your own peril!"... so just a warning, they may or may not be present in algodoo v2.0. Which would kinda suck if you were using them to store variables, no?

You could still do RG scenes, just test the scene every time an update comes out and adjust things if needed.

I think TC42 meant that a Rube Goldberg would be nearly impossible to tune over and over again with each new beta.
Speaking of which, those who have scenes in the Official Scenes pot would kinda have to be beta testers, so they could update the scenes.

I'll contact one of the admins and find out when they want it to begin. We have to take into account what version of Algodoo we will be using and such.
