Clockmaking Contest
Clockmaking Contest
CONTEST EXTENDED.
Open until April 15.
Alright, as the title says, the contest is to build a clock. Very simple, but not really.
RULES
Scripting is allowed, but you'll lose points for it.
You have as many parts and hinges as you need, but you only get one motor.
You must encase the mechanism in some sort of body.
You must have three hands on the clock - hour, minute, and second.
Gravity and air friction must be on.
The speed of the simulation must be at 1.00.
Only slider values are allowed.
Mechanical clocks only.
SCORING
What type of clock is it?. Depending on the complexity of the type you chose, you'll get more points. 5 points can be awarded here.
How creative is the mechanism you made? Even if you chose one of the most common ones, how did you do it? Did you use chains instead of meshing the gears? Maybe you used water to turn the gears? 10 points can be awarded here.
How large is it? Does the size match the type of clock? If the clock is too big, or small, you'll earn less points. The exception here is with watches, which need to be small. 10 points can be awarded here.
How much scripting does it use? The more scripting it uses, you'll lose points. It doesn't matter if you're using a small amount just to trigger something, or the whole clock relies on it. 10 points can be lost here.
Is it detailed? Does it look like a clock? Is it wood or metal? What are the hands made of? Does the look of the objects match the density and such? Using textures will only earn you half the points you'll get. 15 points can be awarded here.
How much does it lag on my computer? While my computer is awful, it can still run a lot of scenes without lagging. The way I'll determine this is as follows: I'll take the realtime of the scene after one minute. For the next three minutes, I'll do that again, leaving me with four numbers. I'll average those out, and that's your score for this section. 100 points can be awarded here.
At 100% realtime, does it keep time correctly? As with lag judging, I'll be taking the average of the time it's off. You'll loose 1 point for every second lost at the end of two minutes. A large amount of points can be lost here (up to 200), but you should probably lose no more than 30.
Does it really catch my eye? There's no real criteria for this section, but if I feel it deserves extra points, you'll be awarded them here. 50 points can be awarded here.
In total, you can earn 200 points, but you can lose them just as fast.
OTHER STUFF
The contest ends on April 7th. Winners will be announced April 9th.
Now, scores will not be shown. I'll write them down in Notepad and keep them aside until the 9th.
Remember than any clock mechanism is allowed.
Also try to remember that circles work a lot better than gears.
Limit one entry per person. Offer void where prohibited. Anyone in the immediate family of the contest maker (brother, sister, parents, grandparents, cousins, nephews, nieces, uncles, and aunts) aren't allowed to enter. Contest ends at 00:00 on April 15, 2010. Anyone found violating the rules will immediately be disqualified. Whoa, I sure wrote a lot here, huh? I guess I should stop...

92% of teenagers have resorted to rap music. If you are part of the 8% who listens to real music, put this in your signature.
90% of teenagers today would die if Myspace/Facebook were completely destroyed. If you are one of the 10% who would be laughing their heads off, add this to your signature.

Well it'll count as a texture. You can always make the fonts with polygons, you know.

I like how you can change the color of the watch without interfering the sleek design.

I don't see why not, but I'm only grading the final one you enter. If your new one gets less points, that's still your entry, so if you want to, you can.

Re: Clockmaking Contest
Disqualified for not having three hands.
Also, it looks awful, lags the shit out of me, and has a crapload of scripting. Even if it didn't break the rules, you wouldn't get more than 50 points.
By the way, the reason I made the 'three hands' rule is because I expected digital clocks.

Re: Clockmaking Contest
I'm not even gonna bother rating it, but I will, and I'll list it for everyone to see what not to do.
It lags like hell. I get 5% realtime.
Shitload of scripting.
It's not synced. It goes too fast.
You can't see how many lights there are, which prevents you from being accurate.
Textures are used.
Exploiting a loophole.
It is, however, original, so you'll get points there.
I didn't do the math or anything, but it's probably about 30 points, maybe 25.

Re: Clockmaking Contest
chronos, shall i make a vid about it, so you can rate that one (no lag here, runs perfect)
as far as i see, its better synced than the analog clock in this contest
it doesn't run too fast here (you're just watching weird, look at sim.time and the state of the clock)
there's not so much scripting inside it (just simple things, like counter etc)

Re: Clockmaking Contest
It still uses scripting. The reason I deduct points for scripting was to make this a mechanical contest. And by all means, make a video. I'm scoring it off Algodoo's timer, which is what I used for all the other ones (just to make sure, I used a real stopwatch, too. Yours lags too much to do that, though).
