I forget the name of it, to be honest. But really, it's a kickass clock, and I want one.

For the 'three hands' rule, I'll let it slide for a clock like that, as long as it's 100% mechanical.

As for who can make it... well, whoever gets it done first, I suppose.

Congrats Mystery, you took a purely mechanical clock and turned it into a code mess. How the hell did you manage to do that? On second thought, don't tell me.

I am now on break, so I will work all day on Sunday to make my clock. It is based on a paper clock construction kit that I have yet to make, that was designed from a really old kit that no longer exists. It has a really cool story, and is amazingly accurate. I might include plans in the submission if you guys want to make your own in 3d, and if the publisher is cool with it.

I guess I'll try and enter. I have a pendulum clock ticking out seconds right now, so hopefully I can get it working OK with minutes and hours.

That's the only hard part, timing the seconds right. Once you do that it's no work at all to use gears to get minutes and hours.

Actually, you have to change the speed and power of the second hand very slightly because the other gears will slow it down. It actually does take some work to make them all work correctly.

Also:

Contest ends in three days.

Re: Clockmaking Contest

Postby Dakta » Mon Apr 12, 2010 10:03 pm

To calibrate my clock, I need to check the period of the pendulum. So far, my efforts to set a var to the current value of sim.time every collision at the end of the period and then print it back on the next collision has failed. Anyone here have any ideas? I'm stuck...

Here's the oncollide of a box at the end of the period that collides exactly once every swing:

Code: Select all
(e)=>{
    scene.my.count = scene.my.count + 1;
    {scene.my.time != 0 ? {scene.my.tick = scene.my.time} : {scene.my.time = sim.time}}
}

and the associated text:

Code: Select all
{(scene.my.count) + "/" + (scene.my.tick) + "/" + (scene.my.time)}

None of this will be in the final clock, but I NEED it to work to calibrate, otherwise my clock is useless.

Have you tried putting braces (the curly brackets) around scene.my.count = scene.my.count + 1;?

Well, that part works just fine. The counter increments every collision, which is once every period. The problem is that none of the sim.time dependent stuff works. I can watch the counter increment just fine, but that's all.

I'll help you :)

Don't use scene.my.time something like scene.my.ct would be better
Scene.my.time seems to be a system variable your essentially trying to change something like sim.time
