Problem with large script menu

Postby Xray » Mon Nov 12, 2012 6:15 am

I'm sure that others have run into this problem, and I figured out a simple "fix" that doesn't always work well, so I wanted to find out if anyone else has a better idea than mine. Here's the problem: When I want to edit a script, such as an OnCollide script, I enter the script menu, and then I click inside the OnCollide script area. If the script is large and extends past the bottom of my screen, then the only way that I can edit code that's near the bottom of the large script is to open the console and then close it. That allows me to scroll down to the bottom of the script and make my changes. BUT the edit has to be done in a specific manner, or else it will not "take". Things really get interesting if I need to add or remove an IF statement that begins at or near the top of the script, and the true/false portion is at or near the bottom end of a large script. I cannot do a partial edit, and then finish the other portion at a later time. Algodoo will not allow syntax errors in the script, and will not save the partial edit.

SO, I am asking if anyone has a better method of editing large scripts that avoids having to open and close the console in order to allow scrolling. I tried copying and pasting the entire script and making changes in a text editor, but that can be a pain in the butt too.

Thanks!

open a text editor, edit your script, save (as .phn)
go to algodoo, reload scene, check script, modify if needed
then in text editor reload file, and continue editing

this should work.

edit: forgot to say that you have to save it as .phn

Basically, there are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who know binary, and those who don't.

Which text editor do you use? Is it the kind that was made spcifically for editing programming languages?

Use notepad++
Its a pretty nifty text editor, you can right click on files and select the context menu option to open with notepad++, instead of breaking your file associations! :D

UPDATE: I'm now the proud owner of a free copy of Notepad++! After trying it out for just a few minutes, I LOVE IT!!! This will certainly make my scripting a lot easier. Thanks again, electronicboy! And my thanks to you, monstertje3, for your comments!

PROBLEM SOLVED! :clap:
