How to balance walker...

Postby Ravenplucker » Thu Feb 17, 2011 11:18 am

I'm not sure this is the right forum, but it seemed the most suitable...?

I am trying to make a bipedal walker than can move at a fairly fast pace. It almost instantly falls over though.

How would I go about balancing it? I remember in some old versions you can make little devices that keep it upright. Are there any like that, or am I doomed to minutely adjusting weights?

inertiaMultiplier = +inf. :thumbup:
Perfect example.

+inf inertiaMultiplier won't work in Phun. Other than that, it is the best possible option.

What I would do at this point is make a frictionless slider with a box in it. The box should be heavy enough to more or less counterbalance the walker- this slider thing should be vertical. Also, put a spring connecting the box to each end of the slider and adjust the spring strength so the weight settles in the middle of the slider, but very quickly begins to slide up and down a lot, if that made sense.

Also, you will want another slider thing, but horizontal. And you will probably want the springs to have zero damping as well.

Look at some of Tank2333's scenes to see what I mean. Tank2333 is without doubt the best bipedal walker maker in the history of Algodoo/Phun. Probably.

Also, the easiest way I have found to pad your walker's feet is to hinge a small box to each end of the bottom of the robot's feet in two places. The hinges will stretch a bit, hiving a little bit of play on the feet.

I do have a little experience with there walkers. I drew inspiration from a Tank2333 phunlet.

By "at this point" I mean until I build this S-Unit idea I have- inspired by RaRaMalum's non-phunlet-friendly RaUnit.
The S-Unit will be phunlet-friendly, air friction based, and will be powered by materialVelocity.

I used this one. :D

Here's the scene if anyone's interested.

The thing I don't like about that is that it will not work in Phun. Thus, I always try to make things without it. I recently created an air-friction-based stabilizer device that I call the S-Unit. Soon, I will come up with a better version now that I know more about e.normal. I will put it in a new Thyme scripting topic to house my S-series.

But yeah, I would balance a walker with the Tank-inspired piston weight thing or an S-Unit.
