Algodoo not working on Win8.1

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1(64 bit). While Algodoo worked perfectly in Windows 7, it stopped working after I upgraded. Whenever I try and open it, it gives the error "This system doesn't support shaders. Please update your graphics drivers and try again.". Well, all drivers are up to date. Here is the logfile:

Where is OpenGL section? Did you install graphics card vendor's drivers (not Microsoft) ?

Unsupported GPU (well, that's my best attempt), Intel GPUs rarely have the required openGL version to run Algodoo (minimum 2.1); unless you're on a laptop you can buy a comptable GPU fairly cheap, the AMD HD5450 (my old card, hence suggesting from experience) is a strong contender for light-weight gaming, it will struggle with games like GTA IV and all that, but a good card for the price if you're looking for a cheap upgrade.

Thanks, but I was able to run it when I was using Win7. The problem only arised when I began to use Win8.1. Also, I downloaded an older version of Algodoo and was able to run version 2.0.0(although it also gave me a warning to update my GPU, but ran perfectly otherwise) but not version 2.1.0.

Maybe the problem has something to do with the newer drivers not being compatible with Win8.1. :?:

Most likely, as I say, Intel are the worse company for stuff like drivers, definitely the worse for Windows support, my only guess would be to try install a slightly older version of the drivers but other than that there isn't much you can do.

Intel and Microsoft hand in hand have a habit of breaking stuff, Most GFX manufactures drop out older models over time for support reasons, so that's always the potential that a older version of the driver package will support your GFX better. I can't really advise you on getting the older versions, I haven't used windows properly in a few years...

Same here. On Windows 8.1 no draw lines, grid, etc. with Algodoo 2.1.0. And no issues with older version of Algodoo (tried 2.0.2b14) on Windows 8.1. So, I'm afraid you can't blame Intel. By the way I have an ATI graphics card.

Looks like there is a problem with openGL shaders support. Are you sure you install latest ATI drivers from their site?
Dream of Algodoo as game development engine...

According to AMD Catalyst Control Center I have indeed the latest drivers. But... maybe that's the problem!
I found some articles mentioning shader and driver instability issues. I also found a discrepancy in versioning by Algodoo and ATI. Finally, even my old trusty system :lol: is reporting issues with AMD Catalyst Host Application. In other words, let me do some further investigation into this matter. Reason I didn't do that before I posted in this forum is that my older Algodoo works just fine (with the same ATI drivers). Logically, in those cases one suspects the changed software. How foolish can you be :oops:

Did a clean install of my graphics driver. I'm now sure that my system works with the latest drivers. My apps are working fine...
except Algodoo 2.1.0, unfortunately.
Did another test with an even older Algodoo (version 2.0.0). Works fine. For what it's worth, my son has a Windows 7 system, the same graphics card (though with a slightly older driver) and Algodoo 2.1.0 works fine. I don't know really what it means, but have you noticed the errors/warnings in the logfile (especially those starting at 968 ms)?

Really don't now what to do next. I haven't been able to nail the problem down to a single source; is it the combination of Windows 8.1 and Algodoo 2.1.0 (my guess) or still a driver issue? Hope somebody can help me out.

If Algodoo works on a similar machine with older drivers try obtaining a copy of the drivers. Driver updates tend to break older graphic cards, especially when it comes to openGL support. You should be able to obtain them with a bit of googling (or grabbing the old installer off the machine if it's still on there)

Found a solution. It was no driver issue. To be honest, I didn't believe that in the first place. Everything else worked fine, only the latest version of Algodoo (2.1.0) didn't. But it should work. Found a post http://www.algodoo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=10212&start=0&hilit=water describing a similar situation. So, I uninstalled Algodoo (again) completely, removed Algodoo folder in documents (new step) and restarted the system (new step). Than installed 2.1.0. My only conclusion is that leftovers (config.cfg?) from earlier versions were causing the problem.
