Algodoo 2.1.0 crashes on first startup

Postby Insanity » Tue Aug 27, 2013 10:00 pm

I just downloaded Algodoo 2.1.0 and installed it. Once the installation was complete and it had the 'Launch Algodoo' checked and I clicked finish, the startup window appeared and very shortly afterwards I got an error popup that said 'Algodoo.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'

I am runing Win XP.

Could you please upload a copy of the log file?

Also, ensure that you have the latest GPU drivers installed.

Where does Algodoo's log file get generated?

the graphics driver you have is using OpenGL 1.4.5076, and a quick notebookcheck of the graphics card says the card supports OpenGL 2.0. the minimum OpenGL requirement for Algodoo 2.1.0 is OpenGL 2.1

Jon-Joy is correct, please see the topic I produced here:
http://www.algodoo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=10150

Algodoo supports at a minimum of openGL 2.1, as for the requirements of openGL Shaders 1.2, the changes between 1.1 and 1.2 are big enough, and 1.2 provides a lot of calls which makes algodoo manage textures properly, which aren't easy in 1.1, and would reduce a lot of performance!

I had attempted to use AMD's autodetect yesterday, but it tells me 'We were unable to find your product or OS'

Their forum was not much help on the matter as to finding the updated driver.

As the GPU will only support up to OpenGL 2.0, but Algodoo requires OpenGL 2.1, am I to conclude this machine cannot run it despite getting an updated driver?

As your GPU is old, you may have to go to the website, and view the legacy drivers, but I have doubts you will get anywhere.

Basically, yes, that machine isn't capable of running algodoo.

With the fact you're still running XP, you're probably going to want to update your computer anyways, as in April 2014, XP is going to be severly at risk of malware and viruses, so I would suggest to either use a linux distrobution if possible, or upgrade your PC.

If you upgrade your PC, and want to run algodoo, take a look at the article I've linked too, which should provide a rough indicator of the hardware you will want!

Sorry I can't be of much assistance!

Thanks for the info. I'd rather figure out I cannot run it then to beat my head into the keyboard trying to figure out why it won't run. I am overdo for a new machine anyways, obviously, and Christmas seems a good time to look for one.
