[solved] Spring problem (suspension and engine)

Postby Kaiz0r » Sun Jan 06, 2013 6:59 pm

Hi everybody,

Since a few days I'm experiencing a strange problem when using springs. I was working on a simple car with suspension and a spring engine. I tried making some before and they worked a little.

With this new car a was making a basic suspension. This was just a body, the wheels and the arms for suspension, nothing else. Only the wheels are colliding on A, the rest of the parts don't collide at all. The springs are at 250n/m, damping 1 and target length 0.7m. After this I tested the movement of the car and found the car would randomly jump around, and eventually the car would flip and explode!

I tried making suspensions before so I loaded some old files. They worked fine. Opened the new file I was working on, car will bounce and/or explode.

So I decided to give the suspension some rest and start on a new spring engine. I tried making some before but they always lacked power and torque. But now I can only make the engine explode. My old engines usually had the following spring settings: 50n/m with -0.5 damping. The new engine will simply explode at 10n/m and -0.1 damping, which is nothing compared to the old ones I made.

Does anyone know what the problem with the springs could be?

I have restarted both Algodoo and the computer muliple times to see if it would change anything, but nothing changed. I have been searching on the internet to see if anybody else has this problem but couldn't find anything.

I'm using Algodoo v2.0.1 on Windows 7 64bit ultimate edition.

This jumping spring problem started a few days ago after I opened a scene which said it was made with a newer version of algodoo.

Except for spawning water with a laser I have never used scripting.

If the problem started only after downloading a scene, then you should reset your config. Warning, this could revert your gui too.

Otherwise, I would change the legacy mode on the springs to revert them to the older behavior.

The problem not in springs, but in incorrectly hinged very thin rods on right wheel.
You hinge it to suspension, not to wheel, that leads to unsolvable conflict of unstratchable hinges and bad behaviour.
This is intended and really nothin can be done (except maybe some helpful indicator to detect such conflicts...).
What else you can adjust to stop from bouncing...
1) You can switch to legacyMode=0 for hinges
2) You can increase density of thin rods to 100
3) You can set hingeConstant=1000 or something not NaN
Dream of Algodoo as game development engine...

Ah, thank you very much!

I never thought it could be the thin rods.. Just tested your sollutions and they work, thank you so much, was getting a little frustrated by it.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you should actually look at the scene that is being diagnosed.
