how old must the previous post be, that the next post will bump it? you could have it in the rules announcements or something like that.

It's actually not a rule. A bump is when you post in a thread that is void of activity for one day or more(that is only my preference). It is only annoying IMO when the one who bumps posts unnecessary or noncontributory comments. If the post is on-topic and actually adds to the topic, it's okay.

If it's less than about five days, it's okay. A week at most. After two weeks or so, I would call it a bump.

I would call it a bump if the topic is beyond eighth or so on the list, excluding announcements and stickied topics, and that number can increase depending on the number of very active topics.

Also, very once-popular topics (with at least two or three pages of posts) deserve to be bumped occasionally anyway.

Like if the video game thread in the living room goes dead, it would be very acceptable to bump it it has almost 59 pages of posts.

I disagree with the eighth on the list rule. I has to be a measurement of time not distance. Look at the "Algodoo for fun" forum i would be pissed off if i saw a new post there to find the last post coming from the dark ages.

I think a lot of new users don't realize how old things are when they see the thread being last posted on from only 4 threads down the list. We need to teach them how little activity there is here.

I say we should have a warning like other forums have, saying that if the thread is older than thirty days, you should think before you post there.

if someone wants to post onto an old thread an admin must approve it (which will unlock it for x amount of days)

Okay fine. I will let the eighth on the list thing vary depending on the activity of the forum. Eighth will be an average.

But still, I think it should be a measure of distance, not time.
Would you be ticked off if somebody bumped a STICKIED topic from the dark ages?
Or an ANNOUNCEMENT?
Or if the activity of a forum was SUSPENDED, like the Collab forum is now?

But yeah, I agree with Chronos in that they need to figure SOMETHING out and add some sort of warning. Like, maybe, put it in place of the Quick Reply thing, and make the warning a button that teleports you to the Add Reply page.

I could agree with you some way. Bump warning before you post on a 3 week+ old topic.

i have seen on some forums that topics that when a topic was inactive for long enough it would be auto locked to prevent bumping

however that was on a very large forums with tons of active members

But yeah, I should come up with an algorithm (not Algo-rhythm) that would tell you if the I would consider the post a bump.

Let's see, D is the distance where the Quick Reply is active.
A is the total activity of the forum- the number of posts in the last week.
S is the number of stickies.

D = (A/4) + S + 2
(A/4) is rounded up.
