This car launches in 2nd gear
It puts the power straight down (no drive hubs)
SO, to move the vehicle "gently" tap [2] and immediately tap [2] again right as the gear hooks up.
Shifting seems hard to some but it is easy, for a fast change, just press the button for the gear you are in i.e. [2]nd (to release) and the next gear up, i.e. [3]rd at the same time.
