I found that by using the "Attraction" parameter of planes, I was able to make a geometry oscillate in the X and Y directions. By sticking a tracer on the oscillating circle, the trace resembles an oscilloscope display. You can change the amplitude and frequency (and also the wave shape) of the trace by carefully adjusting the positions of each of the four planes.

This may be useless, but I think it's interesting. I hope you do too!

Neat!
Nice discovery. I played with this for a while. This is what I found:

1. Higher simulation frequency makes the trace smoother.
2. Higher simulation speed makes the trace brightness more uniform.
3. I made the circle invisible.
4. It worked well on my PC with all planes set at -50000 attraction.
5. If one axis has small amplitude, even when the space between planes is square, then wiggling the plane that effects the axis may increase the amplitude.
I should patent this idea, and maybe Tektronix will pay me royalties if they use it in their future models!
